Way to go Greg - see you made the bike under 3:00:00 and the race under 6:00:00!  The chip seal was a lousy surface and I couldn't count the number of water bottles, spare tires, etc. that rattled out and were laying the road.  I saw a least one person who's seat gave way and several being tended by the bicycle world crew.  My finish... well, I finished my first HIM distance race and that feels really good!  I wish I hadn't struggled so much with the run - finished 40/62 in the 40-44 age group.

Fun race overall even with the muddy walk at the end of the swim, the extra vibration on the ride and unwanted rocks on the run course behind the pool area

Thinking of doing my first HIM this year. Do some people really wear their wetsuit for the bike (or part of it) at this event? My circulation is bad so I get pretty darn cold. Where would you leave your wetsuit if you took it off on the course?

WOW!  You heard some people wore their wetsuit during the bike ride?  That's crazy if its true.  I volunteered for this race last year, it wasn't very cold at all  -  not sure of the water temp.  I'm planning on doing this race this years as my first 70.3.

Check out the posts by AndrewMT and bstauffer12 on the first page of this thread. Maybe they were joking. Lots of discussion about arm warmers and toe warmers too.

The race in 2010 was miserably cold. Last year it was actually really nice weather. The water temps were colder (low 70s if i remember). Wetsuit legal, although some did choose to go without a wetsuit and i didn't hear many complaints about being too cold. As far as people wearing wetsuits during the ride sounds ridiculous. Sounds like a good way to ruin a good wetsuit. arm warmers and toe covers would be a good idea.

Since I have no experience with arm warmers, would they be ok to wear uncovered during the swim (I have sleeveless wetsuit)?

Id put them in your transition for T-1.  Don't wear them on the swim, at least I wouldn't.

Kinda defeats the purpose.  Wet armwarms will just make you cold when the air hits them.  Best bet is to cut up some old thermal shirt and use the arms as arm warmers so you can pitch them once you warm up on the bike.

BTW entry fees go up after today.

Makes sense. Not sure I'll even need the arm warmers. Generally it's my fingers/toes that suffer the most in the cold. Suppose I could wear some gloves.

Just registered! Bit nervous to be honest.

You'll be fine big man.  Plenty of time to get your fitness where it needs to be.

Thanks uhcoog. With time I know I could do alright. My biggest problem is finding the time to train what with work and having twins under 5. Biggest problem is fitting in the long rides and ride/run bricks.

I did the race in 2010 when it was cold. It was right around freezing when the race started, but the water was nice.  You could have not worn a suit and been ok, but just waiting for the wave to start would be the trick.  The first part of the bike going through the forest was the worst part of the race for me.  The race takes place the day after time change so the sun was not up very much and the tree coverage in the national forest makes for a cold (cool) ride.  If you are a transition time weenie, then you can put your arm warmers on, then roll them down and pull them off.  If you want add some baby powder to the inside of them so they come on easy when your wet.  It is easy to put them on this way and you can pull them up when you get to the first strsight away on your bike.

I am thinking of doing the relay with my wife.  She wants to run and I need to work on my bike and swim over the summer.  I think this is the only way to put on the miles/yardarge without taking lots of time away from the family.

Wow, this thread managed to get me out of BT sabbatical!

Jonno, it's a great race and even if it's cold for the start of the bike, you'll be thankful for the cool weather once the run starts.  I suggest doing a very fast upper body toweling off at the start of the swim if it's below 50 degrees.  Otherwise, arm warmers are as far as I'd go.  The start of the bike is a bit shady and cool, but if you can tough it out through the first 15 miles, the weather becomes a real positive.

Good luck with the training.  The run course is nice and flat, but I'd make sure you get in some training miles on the hills.  Have fun!

Contemplating doing this as my first HIM.  I've done probably 10 sprints, just finished my first oly and grew up in dem der Woodlands.  Swim seems much less concerning (400 extra meters relative to the oly), but obviously the bike and the run are more than 2x each relative to the oly.  Sounds like a great event.

Cheers,

Eric

I'am also planning on doing this as my first 70.3 not pulled trigger yet.  ??I just moved to Conroe/Woodlands Texas and the close location couldnt be any better.  My train up has not been where it needs to be but doing Bridgeland to get motivated.  I'am still trying to get use to the weather (its hot). Hittting the pool in the mornings and run/bike later in the day.  Happy training.

Train for oilman and be more than ready for bridgeland. You won't regret it!

Does anyone know if Oilman sell-out?  I would like to see how I do at Bridgeland before I sign up. I was also looking at doing the Oly in Cypress not sure where to spend my money.

I know several guys who signed up week of last year so I'd doubt it sells out.  Especially with Austin being so close.

For those who raced this race previously -

I am running 51050 Galveston, Houston Marathon, Galveston 70.3 and the IMTX. I have not had any rest this year from the training and fear burn-out sooner or later. I have been going hard since Nov 2011 training for Livestrong Marathon, then Kemah and now Bridgeland.

For $135 its much cheaper than most 70.3 and I have done a handful of OUTloud races, including this past weekends Tejas.

Is it worth it? Course? Support? Race? Curious for thoughts. I was thinking taking October off after 5150.

Much of the bike course is on parts of the IMTX bike course. I haven't done it but it's been recommended.

I am considering doing this race also. I loved the bike course at IMTX so would love to ride it again during a shorter race.

Just placed this race on the calender for my first HIM.

I read some negative reports about the rough chip-rock road last year.  Anyone know if that got fixed in 2012?
