Overall Rank = 265/386

Age Group Rank = 31/37
Pre-race routine:

I woke up and had a small breakfast. Race is almost down the street so I didn't have far to go. This being the case I may have been a little to relaxed about getting out of the house. I ended up getting there later than I would have liked. This likely cost me some in T1 as I didn't get to set up as well as I wanted, that plus the threat of rain prevented me from laying everything out.
Event warmup:

Really didn't do much to warm up. I did jog a bit to get to body marking and chip, but other than that nothing really.
Swim
  • 15m 33s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

I am really happy with my time but I likely swam an additional 100 yds during the race. I over-swam the first buoy by a long ways. Actually had a life guard yell to me to stop and Turn around. Even so this swim had a time pretty fast for me and I can't complain.

I was pretty annoyed with somebody doing breaststroke within 50 yds of start when I got a kick to my collar bone. I wasn't able to get around him cause of the crowd but I did cheat off him a bit. One of the kicks I was able to catch the foot and pull my self ahead of him. Feel bad, but not really.

I think I need to start a little closer to front as I think I lost some time trying to swim through the crowd.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better for sure.

Try to start closer to front of wave.
Transition 1
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

Need to get better. This is better than my 5 minute T1 last year but not very fast at all. Need to reconsider what I take time for. I actually put on my jersey, and gloves. Jersey I wanted to have dry as it was chilly when I set up. Gloves may not be needed now that I ride aero more.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster
Bike
  • 41m 49s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.83 mile/hr
Comments:

I think the course is actually shorter than 20K as my garmin has me at about 17 MPH. I really felt like I hit the bike very well. I felt good, was passing more than being passed. I made it up both hills in pretty good shape and completed my fastest race in a Tri yet.

Comments:

Still Slow
Run
  • 30m 47s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

What can I say. I am very happy with the run. Two minutes faster than any 5K in a tri, and only about 30 seconds slower than I stand alone tri.

The first 1/2 Mile seemed brutal but I was able to get in a good rhythm and get faster with each mile. I was actually passing people which I don't do while running.

Split Time Distance Avg Pace
Summary 00:31:09 3.09 10:05
1 00:10:10 1.00 10:10

3 00:10:01 1.00 10:01
4 00:00:48 0.09
What would you do differently?:

Need to keep training the run
Post race
Warm down:

Walked Back to Transition got my bike and left to watch the end of my son's baseball game.

Not sure how I will finish a HIM as I was pretty spent at the end of this one. Big difference though in how I felt an hour after. Last year's tris I was spent the whole day, but I feel pretty good right now. Next up HIM Musselman!!

Event comments:

Loved it, will do it again next year.

Nice job today.  I was there as well.  I was with you on setting up the transition, I didn't want to lay everything out and have it all get wet.  It was good that the rain held off.  Good luck with your HIM, I'm doing the Syracuse HIM in September.  This race helped me find out what I need to work on for sure.

Good race Charlie.  Great swim and your run is really coming along.  Keep after it and trust the plan for the half.
