You stated that you have room to improve the engine, which I believe we all do.  You are pretty damn quick on your bike and if you didnt have a tri/tt, it is a reason to make a jump from a walmart bike or a mid level roady. But you do have a TT bike.

I would say that if your retirement portfolio/mortgage/rent/bills are all looking great and you have excess money, and its what you want, why not?

The follow up questions is if you blow $3500+ and the result is:  Slightly more comfortable and maybe lose a minute or two on an oly distance, would is it still worth it to you?

I bought my carbon bike last year, but not because it was carbon.  I had been riding a second-hand older road bike that did not fit me at all, and decided to start shopping for a bike that would work for me over time. I went with a Specialized Amira because of the women-specific engineering.  It is super comfortable to ride and fits me like a glove. The fact that it is carbon is just kind of a plus.

The day I can say "Man my Cervelo P2-SL is holding me back!" is the day I'll upgrade. That days is a looonnngg way away. Or if it snaps in half.

Not everyone would consider it an "upgrade."  Weight can go either way between the materials.  Carbon flexes better, but see this site, for the bad things that can happen to carbon.

Carbon can probably get in to fancier/more aero shapes than aluminum.

So there's a lot of pros and cons either way.  I'm just not sure I would consider it something that is automatically an "upgrade."

Dude! Those busted-up carbon parts are frigin scary!

To the OP: My Trek alu/carbon is far more comfortable (& thus more tolerable in the long-term)than my Trek full carbon TTX.

Dude! Those busted-up carbon parts are SERIOUSLY frigin scary!

Thanks for the input everyone, it is very much appreciated. I am now sticking with the original plan and getting my bike custom painted in the off season. I bought the paint in April and between getting the bike broken down by the LBS and coordinating with the artist it just won't be able to happen until the off season or during recovery from IM Lou.

pburnett - 2011-06-13 7:21 AM I ride aluminum.... I average around 25 mph.  The engine is still what is holding me back.

Wow..that's almost 40Km/h...I'm still new to cycling..have an aluminium frame and no fancy wheels. Over 18months gone from speeds of under 20km/h to over 27km/h.

Was also putting a case to upgrade..but reading this post seems to suggest..don't bother...

I have replaced my seat with an Adamo...and looking for new wheels....any suggestions on wheels and will they make a difference?
