Total Time = 1h 44m
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 11/31
Pre-race routine:

Ate a bagel with peanut butter & coffee at the hotel. Drank some gatorade & ate a mini-Clif bar on the drive to the race. Stretched really well.
Event warmup:

200 yd swim
Swim
  • 14m 39s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

I took off quickly (I mean QUICKLY). I was at the front of my age group. At 200 yds. in, I went to sight. All of the sudden it felt like my wetsuit was squeezing my lungs. I was gasping for air and flailing in the water! WHAT!!!! I had to revert to breaststroke until I calmed down. I think I just had OWS panic. It was brutal. I just tried to make it to the end of the swim course in any fashion I could - breast stroke, free style, doggie paddle - LOL. I hated the wetsuit and will probably skip it next time. My goal is to do a lot more open water swims this summer.
What would you do differently?:

Skip the wetsuit.
Practice in OW more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Bike
  • 56m 50s
  • 17 miles
  • 17.95 mile/hr
Comments:

I just need to work on my cycling skills. I felt like I went out as hard as I could possibly go. It was difficult to pass people when I wanted to pass them.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Run
  • 27m 51s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I got a 2:00 penalty on the run because my race number was not visible. One side of it had ripped off my race belt, and I guess it had flipped over. Nice. Other than that my run went really well. I ran 8:45 m/m according to my Garmin, and that's a first for me.
What would you do differently?:

Pin the number to the belt in addition to snapping it in.

nice job.

don't dis your wetsuit too quickly (it did cost money and it can help you) - just get out and practice with it.

"I got a 2:00 penalty on the run because my race number was not visible. One side of it had ripped off my race belt, and I guess it had flipped over." - that is BS petty, unimportant.  WOW - You should log your time as your real time regardless of what results say.  Penalties are typically given for safety issues and some for unfair advantage (or both like drafting)
