Can't wait. Really looking forward to this one. To see where I'm at and give me some idea of what to expect in the 70.3

What's the water temp like for this one?  Last year I did the Sprint, with my full wetsuit.  Once I got in the water it was fine, but waiting for my wave to start in the sun was really hot.  I'm wondering if I should get a sleeveless wetsuit for this (and for the HIM maybe next year.)  I'm just a MOP swimmer, so I would definitely wear a wetsuit up to the temp limit.  But my swimming has improved, and I'm thinking now I'd like more freedom for my arms.

Thanks

Boulder Res in July is usually low to mid-70's, sleeveless will be fine.  Also, you've got the option to wait in the water at the until your wave gets close to going.

I actually called this morning & I was told that the water temp was/is 67 today.  I'm thinking about going with a sleeveless wetsuit for the Sprint this Sunday.

Tempting, although The Plan says I'm riding 3:15 on Saturday.  If you've never been on Old Stage before, I'd reccomend it to reduce the surprise factor of it for the first time during the event Yell

Swam at the rez yesterday and the water temp was 69 degrees. It was beautiful and warm. We're planning on riding the bike course this Sun to get ready for Olde Stage Rd. Getting excited for the race! It will be my first Olympic distance!

I actually worried the wet suit will be too warm. The water was great for the sprint. 70 is still sort of cold, but not sure about the HIM in August. The wet suit seems to slow me down. Just can't get a good breathing rhythm. I'm getting excited too. I have a hill to my house that is 15-16%... but not for 2/3 of a mile. that will hurt... but I do like climbing. we'll see. Tell me how it is.

I've worn a full suit every year for the peak and never overheated.  I'm definitely going full.

Thanks for the info about the wetsuit for the Peak! I'm planning on wearing mine but I'm still learning to breathe smoothly while wearing it.

Last year I did my first Olympic, in TX, in a full wetsuit. The water was 76 on race morning. No overheating issues for me. I would say 95% of the people wore a wetsuit, either full sleeve or sleeveless.

P.S. I'll be riding the bike course tomorrow morning around 9:30ish....in case anybody else is up that way

Today was only the second time I have ridden Old Stage. You would think I learned my lesson last year when I rode it the day after my long run......that ride sucked!!

Today.....almost the same. Less than 5hrs of sleep & the day after I did an interval run workout. Old Stage is a pain in the rear.......I mean legs. I read somewhere that the road work on Lee Hill should have been completed yesterday, 6-24-11............yea right.....it's not done. It's basically packed dirt & with lots of gravel/little rocks all over.(don't ride it with good tires) The dirt starts just after you pass 4th St. & turns back to pavement when you hit Old Stage.

I just did Olde Stage yesterday and yes it beat me too. I didn't have to stop but it was not pretty. Glad I did it though cause I'll have a better grip on it for the race! And yes the dirt part was a pain to deal with.

Will the dirt part be done by race? I'm a little worried... my friend set me up with some high dollar brand new race tires. Don't want to screw them up. guess I'll be buying more if I do.

I'm putting time on the friends bike. It's an old dura ace set up... have not looked at the cassette but the small is a 42 up front. Getting around on some hills I can see it will be a total standing mash fest for me. I vow not to walk. I say I like climbing.... we'll see after next week.

I have no idea why I signed up for this race - I don't do hills!  We didn't ride Olde Stage Sunday due to construction, so we went another way up Lefthand Canyon to Jamestown.  Those 8 miles of climbing were harder than all 112 miles of IMTX.....  If I wasn't bribed with pancakes at the top of the hill, I probably would have turned around.

This should be an interesting introduction to Colorado triathlons....

I heard that the dirt part will be repaved shortly and definitely in time for the race so your tires/wheels should be fine.

It's only the one (short) climb and then the rest of the course is actually really nice. It was also quite empowering to reach the top of the hill and then you realize that it wasn't so bad after all!

If I can do it...anyone can do it!!!

And what's the deal with the strict 35mph speed limit on the decent? Is it particularly twisty, or hazardous... how long is that in effect for the decent.... all the way or a part? I assume there will be plenty of signage for us to know what is up. Total bummer.... I love going down fast. Always looking for a new PB.... right now it's 52 on my MTB.

The year I did the Peak there was a sheriff w/ a radar gun on the descent.  When I looked down at my computer I was doing over 40mph but didn't get stopped.  Not sure why the speed limit -- maybe because of the stop sign at the bottom?

The speed limit is for safety because of the curve at the bottom of the hill. And they WILL enforce it, resulting in DQ. They won't stop you, they just report your number to race officials. Use your brakes a little on the initial descent to avoid DQ, then let it fly the rest of the way down the canyon.

Also, watch out for bears!

That's right.  The radar gun is (or was in the past) at the curve at the end of the straight, steeper part of the descent, maybe 1/3 of the way down.  After that you can go as fast as you want.  They put it in place after a couple of bad accidents during the race including one where the racer crossed the yellow line in a curve because he was going too fast and went under an oncoming car.

Bear spray is optional .  I was about 5 min in front of her in that race when it happened!

Anyone here able to compare the hills of the escape from alcatraz race to old stage?  I've not been up there yet, but I did to Alcatraz this year and managed well on their hills (recognizing it was at sea-level and that does help a lot).

Relatively flat in Pueblo, so I have to go find hills to train on.
