Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 04:00. Took a shower and had bagel and cereal for breakfast.On arrival at the site took 2 advils and a accelerade bottle.
Event warmup:

Arrived 1 1/2 before start! Took it relaxed, did a few running steps and started the mental. This is my first marathon and to everyone I only want to finish but in my head I want to get over with it in 04:30. Everything is prepared here for my run. I've been on fire for the last 4 days and waiting for the sound of the horn. As I visualize myself finishing I listen to a wonderful playlist from my favorite triathlete Peter Reid. This really cranks me up.

Comments:

As the horns blows I'm ready to rock.I feel so good that I could sprint this damn marathon, but I'm brighter than that and know that the only way to get through is PACING! So I stick to my plan and find my little blue balloon that has the 04:30 marker on it. I put myself maybe 2 minutes in front and hold the pace. Everything is going fine.I pick up Gatorade and water at every station. I have a few gels and a few Powerbars that I'll take regulary on the course. Once in while I feel so good that I cheat my pacing a little. They're a lot of people out there so I start reeling them in one by one without pushing to much, I know I have to stick to the plan. By the time I hit the 14 km marker I have the urgent need to stop at a portapotty........$hit happens! I'm stuck with a diarhia.... As I get out my little blue balloon is 50 yards in front so I dash to catch up. I continue like this for a few km and the same circus starts over :( After my forth stop at 26 km I'm way behind my blue balloon. I try to catch up but can't. I lose sight of it at the 30 km marker. I'm pi$$ed, but I will not give up. On the way down the otherside of the bridge my knees and legs begin to hurt. I'm slowing down alot.I never thought that my body would be overcome by the pain compared to low energy. I wasn't feeling tired at all. The spirits were high but the legs just didn't follow. I keep on following some runners but most have a faster pace than me. Or is it that I'm slowly coming to a halt? No I will not give up!At th 40 km marker, this guy from the gym where I work out (I notice him cause he has The dot M Tatoo) shows up from the arrival yelling at me to go on that I'm almost there.....I think to myself that guy is crazy, he just finish a marathon and the runs back almost 5 k to encourage our racers!Finally after 5 hours of hard work I go through the finishing chute. Thats only 1/3 of Ironman whichs means I have alot of training and experience to acquire. :)
What would you do differently?:

Train harder (faster and longer).
Plan properly my hydration and nutrition.(though it wasn't that bad)
Have some spare Advil for during or after the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Pepsi and a big hug from the gf! I tried to strech but my legs were like cement! Ice bath was welcome. Pasta dinner and to the bed early.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Portapotty!
Legs!I need more endurance!

Event comments:

Please excuse my poor grammar, I havent written in english for years!

Congratulations! To finish a marathon is definitely an achievement. I haven't had the guts to sign up for one yet.

Question: how does the "balloon pacing system" work? From your report it sounds like there was a balloon (carried by someone?) traveling along the course at the 4:30 pace.

Thank you all for your good words.
To answer the question, they're were 5 or 6 racers wearing a balloon of different color.
yellow = 3 hour pacing
green = 3:15
red = 3:30
etc. That help alot for me as a beginner. Without my little blue balloon I've would have done 21 km in a 1:30 but would have probably not finished!

Now let's plan that Ironman!
