It's hard to tell where the hitches are going to be but it looks like and history of the WTC shows that it will be a good race in an awesome setting. There always are hic-ups especially on an inaugural venue, the good thing on that is most of the 2500 will experience it so no advantage.

Nothing to be scared of but if you are anything like me there is a nice "thump" in the ribcage on the morning of the race just after you get marked-up and realize this is going to happen. Then "it's on" and for the next few hours the deep thoughts go away.

I still get the "thump" and I've done 7 of these things (2 inaugural).

I'm in.

Not expecting much. Some obvious logistics issues. But I wanted to do another IM, and this one is in my backyard. Gonna actually save me a bundle in hotel/transportation costs. Overall, still cheaper for me than the non-branded races.

I got in also, I am both excited and scared.  Will be my first IM distance race.  I know we are 60 weeks away but anyone up there know the elevation of the bike course?

X2

I've done WTC organized races (Ironman and Ironman 70.3) and I've done Korff organized races (NYC Tri) and I have had excellent experiences every time.  I have confidence that they will put on a great event.  Plus the chance to race an Ironman without airfare, travel, bike shipping, etc. was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

I agree with this 100%.  I also think that biking on the Palisades Parkway will be both scenic and pretty cool.  I just need to drive it and get a feel for elevation.

I'm in as well - traveling from Denver for my 2nd IM, assuming I get through CDA next week. I grew up around the midpoint of the bike course (exit 10, Middletown Road) and the vertical is really going to add up - I think the turnaround point will be exit 14, near Lake Welch - there are tons of rollers on that route, and we'll hit every one of them twice in both directions.

I'm not sure if this link will work or if is correct, however my brief review is that it works and is correct.

Map my Tri, at the bottom of the page you can click on the elevation

I mapped out the run course on gmap-pedometer, just letting it automatically follow that path on the Palisades side. I figured this path is right be the water and thus very flat. But the profile then showed lots of rollers. Nothing huge, but just surprised me. Anyone know how that path really is? i'll probably have to do some recon on there soon enough anyway.

Am I wrong in assuming that the swim should be all with the current?  That would be wonderful for me.

Not sure about the current, but everyone make sure you are up to date on your shots before swimming in the Hudson lol.

Yes, swim is with the current, and more importantly, with the out-going tide. According to tidal charts, high tide is ~ 4am, low tide ~ 11am: http://xtide.ldeo.columbia.edu:8080/locations/19.html?y=2012&m=8&d=... Should be a pretty fast swim....

I'm in! I'm glad registration is over so I don't have to read comments from all the WTC haters anymore. After a while all the downer comments started taking the excitement out of trying to get a slot.

At any rate - how do you think the weather will really be on race day? I know it can get pretty nasty in the city that time of year but since the race is actually is NJ for the most part and along the water will that make it any less brutal?

Full disclosure I live in Florida and my only previous Ironman was St. George this year where the temps surprised everyone and hit the mid 90's.

I originally was dead set against this race because of the weather. I always picture August as brutally hot and humid. I simply don't do races in August anymore. But you know, it seems like the summer has moved up a month as July tends to have those hazy, hot, humid heatwaves. August can actually have some of those pleasant "feel like summer is breaking" days. So, count on it being hot and humid but not overly so. And with some luck, we'll get a break. The best part is that 100% of the run is along (or over) the water. We'll toast a bit on the bike though.

Here's some more historical information for the Hudson currents at the George Washington Bridge.

Not sure what that actually means though. What I'm trying to answer is, once I break out my inner tube and carry a six-pack of beer, will the current be enough to carry me to transition before the swim cut off?

Appreciate your help but I sure as hell can't make out those charts.

Laughing Exactly.  As a slow swimmer (for now), I am looking forward to any benefit the course may offer on the swim.

I am a newbie to triathlon with some background in biking and a little running, but figure that once I am free of the clydesdale designation (in the next few weeks) ,  I'll have over a year to and prepare with a goal of finishing in under 14 hours or so.  We'll see...
