MonkeyClaw - 2011-06-16 9:31 PM

monkeyboy64 - 2011-06-16 5:31 PM I'm happy with my Contour HD 1080P. It has a much more aero profile than the GoPro. It's quite easy to use as well. The first video is one I first saw on their site. The next couple are some early experiments of mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxtJxYgcXnkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMdGCNdZU9o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zboh27Aa1NkI have no connection to the company...just happy with my purchase.

I've been trying to decide between the Contour and the Go Pro. Neither one of them has an LCD for settings and preview, right? Or Zoom, or other basics that are nice to have.

I also have the Contour HD 1080P.  I chose it because of the smaller profile too, although now I wish it had the ability to take stills at set intervals (I think the GoPro can do that).

The new Contour GPS can be tethered to your Android or iOS smrt phone via Bluetooth so you can use it as a viewfinder to check the settings and framing.

These things are pretty tough, tho only video I have of one is when I broke my back in the racecar.

Its at about the 2:50 mark, but as dark as that place was they take pretty good video and sprint cars aren't exactly "stable".

I'm pretty sure the Alcatraz swimmer was using the chest mount with an additional joint between the camera and mount plate so he could angle it down his body (I've done the same shot, at other events tho). I've been shooting GoPro of many of my events since last year. I have a bunch of them posted up on my Vimeo channel at:
http://vimeo.com/channels/hacksaw

I'd be happy to answer any questions if I can. Best wishes IMO, GoPro is the way to go.

agarose2000 - 2011-06-15 12:53 PM Any tips on how to stop the "shakes?"

There is a software program that will "smooth" those out, I can't recall what the name of it is atm.

Destroyer - 2011-06-16 10:51 AM Does anyone know what mount was used for that recent GoPro video of the Escape from Alcatraz swim?  Sorry I don't have the link, but the camera was on his back somehow, above the water and facing toward his shoulders.

I'm pretty sure GoPro makes a should/chest harness, my guess is that use that or a modification of it.

I've had my share of fun with my GoPro as well  Still kind getting used to shooting with it and considering different mounts, specifically the chest mount for cycling or mtb.  The surfing footage was simply hand held.

Here's one I did at my last motorcycle trackday. Crappy editing and alternate view splicing was done just with the free windows movie maker.

I have an older model GoPro (non HD) but the "wide" version.

Haven't used it a lot but here is a video I took a couple months ago bungee jumping.

Finally got around to editing some of the video we had captured since getting the camera; unfortunately there was a bit of condensation forming on the housing which affected the video a little.

Anyway, here is a quick video of how quickly a gap can open when you aren't paying close enough attention (and yes, I'm the one who gets dropped ).

Thought I'd chime in here.  Just got my Go Pro which I plan to use in Kona in a few weeks!  I want to figure out how to make it work in all three legs.  I'm set on some sort of "gooseneck" mount for the bike so I can move it around...

The swim is the big question since it needs to be rock solid with the mass start!  I'm hoping to somehow have it on my shoulder or in the swim cap?

I have one I just bought and used it the exact way DC Rainmaker posted in his blog.  Works great!

If you see a flaw in my stroke let me know!

Also, what editing software are people using?  I don't care for Windows Movie Maker.

Maybe its just me but I think underwater video analysis is going to be the must have item in swimming much like what the power meter is to cycling.

(wow, that was a total Sheldon Cooper sentence)

Bazinga!

I'm going to buy a video camera to primarily use for stroke analysis, but will also occasionally use it to video things like transition demonstrations.

Is the GoPro the one that most people like the best, or are there some others that I should consider?

I'd say GoPro is teh best camera format choice, the decision would be which GoPro. The New GoPro HD 2 is available in a couple different packages that have different mount options for 299 retail. The motorsport version comes with a suction cup and stick on mounts, the Outdoor includes stick on mounts and the Chest mount(called Chesty).

If you're not an advanced user that will utilize all of the camera features, I'd consider the regular GoPro HD Naked with is still available for 199.95. They call it the Naked because its just the camera and 1 sticky mount.

If you want to make your own mounts you can get a GoPro Tripod adapter(9,95) that will allow you to mount the camera with a 1/4-20 bolt. You could easily build a pool mount with a small point and shoot portable tripod with the GoPro tripod mount.

The GOPro seems to be available at most bike shops and sporting good stores, but here's all o fthe parts I'm referring to http://www.upr.com/GoPro-Camera-Systems-c53.html

Here is the link to my first movie with the GoPro earlier this year. Haven't had much a chance yet to use it since, but I plan on using it for a video series this year in prep for IMWI.

I can only say great things about this camera so far, light, versatile, HD, great angles, and if you have a mac you can edit these very well on a basic editor too.

If you haven't already, you should look into the K Edge GoPro bicycle mount.  It is metal not plastic like the GoPro one.  So it shouldn't break like the plastic ones I have read about.  I got mine form JensenUSA.  It is pricey at around $50 but it is way more durable.
