Subject: From Couch to IM in 18months?

I'm just about 18months away from my 40th Birthday. I'd like to celebrate by completing my first ever Iron Man.

I've complete 2 sprints and have my third on Fathers Day.

I'd consider myself a very active couch potato. Has anyone here went from couch to IM in 18 months?

Mike

It can be done in 6 months.  I'm about to do CdA and trained for 9 months.

In 18 months you can not only do it, but do it quite will if you train right.  Get yourself into a 70.3.

You can do it! 18 months is plenty of time. I do suggest you do a half IM and other races. If you start thinking only about that IM, you will be burned out on it quickly. Start slow and consistent and you will be surprised how your body will respond. Have fun!

I ran my very first tri ever last Sunday and it was the Kansas 70.3.  I would HIGHLY recommend running 70.3 distance first as I have a lot of lesson learned from this race.  I didn't train the best for this race and didn't research proper nutrition while on the race.  I ended up losing a lot of salt and my body dumped a ton of water (lost just over 11 pounds in that race) and got really dehydrated.  My legs were all cramped up and it took everything I got to just cross the finish line.  But I did it and will do it again next year.  In the meantime I am planning multiple sprints and a few oly distances this year.

Yep.  Me.  And it was shorter than 18 months.

No, it absolutely cannot be done!

Just kidding.  Some folks are motivated by the 'it can't be done' thing so I was just challanging ya.  :-)

Ditto. Five years of sprints before last year, but never in great shape. Training in earnest started in January last year and concluded successfully at IM WI, with an olympic and HIM along the way.

Go for it! I did the same thing in 14 months, it's a lot of training but you have plenty of time

Good Luck!
