Leamington Triathlon Weekend
19C / 66F
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 30m 15s
Overall Rank = 106/138
Age Group = Women 50-54
Age Group Rank = 3/5
Pre-race routine:

Arrived at Leamington the night before. Met up with Susan and her hubby for dinner. Hardly got any sleep at the Comfort Inn.
Event warmup:

Short swim. Stand around in the water to acclimatize to temp and water pressure. But there was no indication of the horrifc swim that I was going to have, or the chop out to the first buoy.
Swim
  • 19m 53s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 39s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim time includes run up to transition.
Horrific swim. Very choppy. Had to float on my back before even reaching the 1st buoy. Can't breathe. Took in water and was coughing.
Lesson learnt - 1 decent swim @ Woodstock doesn't make me a decent swimmer. Another humbling experience.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Fought with wetsuit as usual as it stuck to my wrists and heels. Came in same time as Helen R, but she's off like a bullet while I fought with my wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Wish I knew, but I'm getting used to it now.
Bike
  • 42m 36s
  • 20 kms
  • 28.17 km/hr
Comments:

Bike time includes transition. 30.3kph according to Garmin.
Went straight through one intersection instead of turning right as race crew did not give proper directions. Had to make a u-turn and lost a lot of momentum. Very windy. Cross winds blowing me all over, not able to hold aero position. Was scared to even take hands off handlebar to drink.
1st AG on the bike by just under a min.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Was able to take Garmin off bike, clip it to wrist strap, change mode from bike to run, and loop strap around wrist - felt quite co-ordinated to be able to do all that w/o losing stride / time.
Run
  • 27m 47s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

5.33km instead of 5k, 8:25min/mi based on Garmin
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, HR would suggest I ran at the right intensity. This is a decent run for me. But the course is definitely longer than 5km.
Post race
Event comments:

Overall rank includes men.
3rd AG, but not a good race overall. Horrific swim, went off course on bike, run was ok. First place is 2' faster, clearly I lost it all on the swim!
Got to meet BT'er Stef Wood and Helen Robertson for the first time.

PS - after a night's sleep, felt a lot better about the race. Sure I lost it on the swim, and didn't have a gd bike. But it looks like on small races, I CAN contend in my AG, and that at this age, I am still S/B/R'ing, that's not a bad lifestyle. Life is Good.

Great job on the race! I agree, the water was choppy, especially when the men's wave turned at that first buoy. And the wind was pretty strong.... though I don't know if it's ever not windy in Leamington?? Tongue out

Hey Great job on the race. Didn't meet you but noticed you chatted with Stef.

I had the worst swim ever too. I could have gone surfing in that chop once we started. My warm up swim was great but once we started and I took a boot to the head I had to stop. I also swam all over the place and hardly on course... They should have held the women of a tad bit longer to let the water settle for you ladies. Everytime I tried to take a breath on my left side I got water. I had to breath right side only.

Meh it was my first sprint and I was pleased to have just finished. They do a good job in running this event. Great WORK...I hope you had fun too.
