Overall Rank = 62/318

Age Group Rank = 14/47
Pre-race routine:

Left Green Bay with Bill and Jason at 4:45am. Arrived to HC at 5:25. Race check-in, Transition set up. Eggs, Toast, Choc. Milk at 4:25am. Sipped Gator-ade and water mixture with electrolyte tablet on way down and prior to race. 1/2 cliff bar prior to swim. 1 GU 15 minutes prior to swim.
Event warmup:

Just stretching.
Swim
  • 40m 51s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was about the same as Elkhart lake prior week. Wet suit helps a lot. I really just need to get in shape for the swim I think. 2 minutes faster than Half Iron at 2010 DC, so that is nice.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep swimming. More training and drills will help. 4 weeks til next race. It would be nice to be in upper 30 minute range.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Nice transition. I take a little extra time to get socks on during this transition. Takes me a minute to acclimate after swim. Strippers helped remove wet suits which is nice. Felt I got on bike and up big hill very nicely.
What would you do differently?:

A better swim will help for a smoother transition, but overall it was what I had planned.
Bike
  • 2h 44m 54s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.38 mile/hr
Comments:

good bike today.
What would you do differently?:

Push a tad harder. Did not have HR monitor. This would have helped to see how hard I was working. the second 28 miles was faster than the first 28 so overall it was good.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Smooth. I was ready for the run. Legs felt great. A little upset stomach. Was nervous it would cause me to crash as it did in DC last year, but could not do anything about it.
What would you do differently?:

More water on bike.
Run
  • 1h 37m 30s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Was hoping for a 7:15 pace so just missed. Probably could have pushed a little harder at end, but was cautious of stomach. Never got worse so that is good. Tougher running on trails than road, but appreciated the shade when it was available. No one passed me on the run and kept fairly consistant. Hope for sub 1:35 in DC
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Just more training.
Post race
Warm down:

Food, stretch, ride home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to focus on training and recovery more. I was really not in the mood to race today. The swim really puts me in a uncomfortable nervous state and do not think I was mentally prepared. Finally woke up towards the end of the bike and finished with a good race. PR'd by 35 minutes. Would be nice to go sub 5 hours at DC.

Event comments:

Nice weather, good course, lots of friends and a PR. It was a good day.

Course: Mostly flat. Headed south and then east for a loop and back to bike start where we finished with the sprint bike course. Very slight wind from east so most of ride the wind was at the side. I never really felt good until about mile 40. Goal was to average 20mph and did that. did not go all out at end so I think I could have shaved a few minutes off time, but I will test that in Door County. Should have drank another 30 oz. or so. Started to get warmer towards end of ride.
