At my tri this weekend, there were wooden box type bike racks which were pretty narrow. I set up my transition with my bike headed south. The girl next to me set up her run stuff on the north(rear) of my bike. When I came off the bike, I changed the direction of my bike to north-so my front wheel was beside her run stuff. Apparently, my front wheel turned towards her run stuff and blocked it. After the race was over, she practically screamed at me about my bike blocking her run stuff and how it was no fun for her and blah, blah, blah. I apologized, said I had no idea, and apologized again.

So, would you have scolded me or would you have accepted what I did as part of racing and moved on?

Why did you move it? It's just better if you have bikes hanging opposite of each other.

While I know it wasn't a big deal to you... and yes she shouldn't have screamed at you... she might have been racing for an AG spot. She probably planned her transition and you messed it up.

Just remember, not everyone races "just for fun". Some people find racing to win fun. I'm good racing for fun myself... but if you want to win, every little second counts. One time I missed 3rd place by 4 seconds. Yeah.

i've seen much worse and have exerienced much worse on a regular basis in transition. This is not a HUGE deal. Hell, this past weekend I was racking my bike "properly" I have to swing it around to rack by the rear of the seat (ISM adamo), in doing so due to the congestion I knocked over 2 buckets, shifted 3 fully laid out beach towels and tangled up 4 mylar balloons...

it wasn't intentional, so no worries.. lesson learned and move on to the next race.

bryancd - 2011-06-20 3:14 PM Well said, jldicarlo, and I can attest that even as a FOP'er racing for the overall win, I have spent plenty of extra T2 seconds fussing around, flipping my bike, angling it under the bar, so that I hang it up properly by the seat just as I had in T1. I don't do it to be altruistic, I do it becuase it's more often then not part of the rules.
I'm confused. I thought it was ok to initially rack your bike by the seat then put in in on the handle bars during T2. I'm pretty sure they told use to do it that way at my last race.

No. I've had worse done to me in transition, and I've never complained to anyone. As some have said, it's a crowded sport and there's a lot going on. People bump into things. They move. More importantly, as I envision how the complaint scenario might go, it doesn't seem likely that complaining would bring any sort of satisfaction. In fact, it could blow up into a very unpleasant situation that could color my memory of the day. Since there's nothing to be gained, I'd deal with it and move on.

TriPatrick - 2011-06-20 2:03 PM I do not understand how the OP's wheel was cover the running gear.  Why would you put your running gear so far deep where someones wheel could block it?
The racks are similar to these: So the OP had their bike in the race like shown here but when they returned their bike, their bike was on the opposite side (next to the road bike in the picture). Normally with this type of rack the bikes alternate (as shown in the picture) and your transition gear would go in the spot next to your bike. Shane

Thanks Shane confusion has been eliminated.  Now I understand why someone could have been upset.

I'd spent way too much time trying to figure out the layout to which the OP was referring.

Yeah you done screwed up. No biggie, just dont do it again.

I've had people throw their wetsuits on my shoes, rerack their bike in my spot, etc. etc. and never got too upset about it. It's part of the race -- IF it's unintentional. Just move it and go on. If it cost me a podium spot then yes, I would've been pretty upset. Thankfully I dont have to worry about that.

Normally you can but there are races where they will tell you that the bike must always be racked by the saddle (which has caused me several issues as there are several races I usually do where the rack is too low to rack by the saddle). The couple events I've done where we've been given the instruction I've followed the rules but otherwise I rack by saddle in T1, brake levers in T2.

I'm not sure how racking by my levers causes an issue for other athletes as my bike takes less room as the handlebars are on the rack and not blocking anyone's equipment and my bike is much mroe stable racked by the levers than the saddle so it is less likely to shift and get in someone's way.

Is this something you should check before every race or would is it a local rule that would be clearly posted somewhere?

It would depend on the race I suspect; if it is USAT sanctioned, it should be explained in the prerace brief as it is a requirement that is above and beyond the rules. If it is not USAT sanctioned, then I would expect it would be posted in the race rules and probably explained in the prerace brief as well.

I think it's a USAT rule that says the bike needs to be racked with the front wheel touching the ground.

In my last tri they didn't have assigned rack spots and didn't give any direction on how to rack the bikes other than "rack the bike by the seat, ten bikes to a rack". Well... on our rack we had 8 bikes and there was no way you could fit another one. One guy refused to rack his by the seat, so took up the room of 2 bikes, right next to me, the rest of the bikes were all racked facing the same direction so all of the handlebars got tangled. I was the first on the rack back after my swim and my bike got stuck on the bikes on either side of me, turned out to be almost a 4 minute transition because I had to wiggle my bike out, then there was no place to put my wetsuit so I had to throw it to the side in the mud, my bike shoes and running shoes were under the pedals of my bike, so I had trouble getting to them. Did I complain? Nah, when you have that many bikes racked that close together it's going to be chaos, just part of life. Maybe if I had been contesting for a podium spot I would be irked... but mainly I just didn't want to damage a $4,000 bike with my $150 wal-mart bike.

Just a slight hijack.

House rules on racking by seats is slightly unfair for people with seats that rest higher than the rack.

Unless they are empty, it takes some serious effort to get my bike seat-racked in those cases.

I have to do some wierd angles.

When there are a bunch of bikes and equipment thrown about in the middle of a race, forget about it.

I also assume that those of us BOP'ers timed on calendar-mode are not going to worry about the extra few seconds if they come in after me.

I think it's a USAT rule that says the bike needs to be racked with the front wheel touching the ground.

The only thing I could find in the rules was under Article VII "Transition Area Conduct" which says:

"7.3 Bicycle Placement. All participants must return their bicycles to an upright position in the properly designated bicycle corral after completion of the cycling course and before beginning the next segment of the event. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty."

It doesn't say how they should be rack, just that the need to be racked upright in your corral.

The last USAT race I did they were very specific as to how the bikes were to be racked (before and after the bike).  Perhaps it is RD specific though.  They weren't just telling us to have the front tire on the ground but also what side of the rack it had to be.

Unless you're short like me. I've had racks so tall my front wheel doesn't touch the ground! Embarrassing? Yes.

To the OP -- it may make you uncomfortable to do so, but you may want to ask a race official if they know for sure which way the bike goes. Sure you may look like `the new guy' but better to be him than the `guy who doesn't know how to set up transition and ruined another person's race.'

My seat was that perfect height where it would just hang on the rack, but wouldn't go under it, and my handlebars were taller than the rack, so I had to lean my bike to get it out from under the rack, that was interesting with the bikes that close together and the reason my transition was so long. The funny thing is that I'm relatively short at 5'-5" so I don't know what people with taller seats were doing. Could just be the shape and set up of my bike.

If it was USAT you may have violated the rules, not 100% sure.  So far this year, I've been lucky, on either ends of the racks so I had enough room to bring in furniture.  Yesterday, I was the ONLY bike on my rack (Xterra).

I don't think I would have said anything, but I also check things out really good prior to leaving for the swim.  I wiggle the bikes on both sides of me to see what happens and if it causes any issues.  If it does, I adjust accordingly.

I know most race for a PB so there is stress, but unless I'm racing for a podium and/or cash, I wouldn't say anything.  I may give constructive advice later, but not be a btch about it.

I really don't know the rule on which way the wheel should face when the bike is racked the 2nd time.  I know lots of riders rack it front wheel first and I'm fine with it...just don't mess with my space.  When you come in the first time and rack your bike use that same space the second time.  That's what I do.  I don't want to inconvenience anyone and I don't want anyone to inconvenience me.  Leave a bike in my space, knock my bike over, or throw a wetsuit in my spot I will be pizzed!  But not enought to scold someone about it.  The only time I would have actually scolded someone was when I did Redman.  Some d-bag left a bloody wash cloth on my shoes and towel after the swim.  It was enough to make me want to puke!
