I live in Hutchinson and really need to practice my OWS before my July 9th tri in Dallas.  Are there any good places to practice OWS in the area or close to Wichita?  Cheney lake may be a little too muddy and choppy for me.

Lake Afton near Goddard is a popular OWS destination for Wichitans... you have to buy a single day parking pass for something like $3 at the little bait/gas station at the entrance off of McArthur Rd.

I've only swam at the swimming area marked on the west side of the lake - see this map http://www.sedgwickcounty.org/lake_afton/images/AftonMap.pdf

There are cement poles/boueys to mark the swimming area... the distance one-way from one end to the other is around 300 yards (give or take). It gets kind of tedious sometimes doing 600yd laps, but it works.

Beware... it's really "muddy" - they don't call the Tri hosted there "Mudwater Triathlon" for no reason Tongue out

I've never actually done an OWS in Cheney, so I'm not sure.
It's not *that* bad/muddy when you're in it, but every time I get out I can blow my nose and mud comes out. Gross, eh!

I visited some friends at Cheney last Thursday so I went for a swim.  Nice rollers as always on Cheney but I did just fine.  Kept telling myself it is just water and didn't have any anxiety problems.  Looking forward to my first Tri with OWS.

I think it is about the worst.  I did the Mudwater Oly and all I could taste is the burnt firewood and charcoal.  It may have just been a bad day but it really turned me off to that place.
