Subject: First OWS in Lake Michigan

So I packed up my swimsuit, wetsuit and goggles and headed off to the lake after work for the first time.  MAN is that water cold!

It was an entirely different animal swimming in the lake from swimming in a pool.  Much more challenging and a lot more fun.  There was a pretty strong current to take me off course, and choppy waves to swallow when I came up for air.  Mind you, I grew up swimming in the lake, but working out is another matter.  I can go for an hour in the pool, or splash around playing all day, but 10 minutes was about all I could take today.

Looking forward to more after-work swims.  I thought this particular beach was free of charge on Mondays, but unfortunately that doesn't start until 7/11, so my little 10-minute foray cost me 8 bucks.    Time for a season pass.  Once or twice a week in addition to some pool drills should prepare me pretty well for my Lake Michigan tri on 7/30.

To anyone who has access to OWS and hasn't taken advantage of it yet, do!

ETA: note to self - bring a towel next time.

What beach charged you money. Oak street is free and there's 1/2mile markers. It's a popular spot for all of us Tri geeks. Just have to watch out for an empty beer bottle here and there. I did find a $10 bill at the bottom once. Wasn't quite enough to pay my $50 parking ticket though.

Whereabouts in Lake Michigan?

I am going to be in Leland next week. I am wondering if the temp will be tolerable. Cold and unpleasant I can do, but hypothermia I would prefer to avoid.

I assume youre not in Chicago because the `triathlon beach' at Oak Street is free. Just don't take much stuff as it could disappear while swimming, though that never happened to me.

Beware, Lake Michigan can get rough at times!

You must be in a different part of the lake.  I did an hour long swim at Oak St. Beach last weekend and thought the water was warm.  I believe it was 62F and much better than the 51F a few weeks earlier.
