I do love the Greek yogurt too - definitely want to try the jessieswims taco recipe with tofu & cottage cheese soon - maybe this weekend. Cottage cheese is so great because it (like the greek yog) has so much protein! 

Wishing everyone a great 4th of July weekend (this is my "friday) & healthy eating. I've got a wedding to go to on Sunday, but it's a bbq-catered event & I'm a vegetarian, so should be smooth sailing. I also have some great workouts planned (hopefully weather will cooperate). 

I had a stumble last night, surprised myself at how many calories I can put away (when I actually stopped to add it all up). Really shouldn't be a surprise, but anyhow, I will try to remember how I felt - which was less than spectacular this morning & take that forward with me in this challenge. Definitely not worth the binge in the long run.

Great thing to do with greek yogurt is add a teaspoon of unsweetened coccoa and stevia...yummy chocolate yogurt!!

By the way I made a weird discovery at dinner. We didn't have any sour cream, on a whim I subbed cottage cheese. I know, sounds gross, but actually fulfills the want for shredded cheese and sour cream all in one, and it's healthier. I've never tried to interchange the 2 before.  Thanks for the tip.

Worked out with the kids at the gym tonight.  Treated them all to ice cream after and I was able to resist!  YES!!

Happy Holiday Weekend everyone!!

OK I know this is gonna be a tough weekend to stay on track but I hope everyone's got the motivation to give it a shot!  I had my cheat day yesterday (and damn did I ever cheat...can you say 10 Oreo Double Stuf cookies???) so today and tomorrow I'm gonna give it my best shot to keep my cravings in check.

I'm running a 10K at midnight tonight, so today I'm carbing up a bit, but no gluten, and nothing fried.  Maybe a little pasta tonight...but it'll be rice-flour pasta. 

Have a great FOURTH!!

Anyone have days where your belly feels like it has a worm?  I am in the middle of one of those days.  Wait, scratch that, it's still early morning here.  Lots of day left to suffer through.  I think it is cause I didn't have my usual post run smoothie.  Stick with what works I guess.  Maybe if I have it for lunch it will help stop the cravings.  I'm pretty low on protein right now as well.  Anyone have tips on what to do once you get into that state?  I'm trying to resist...

Oh man! I feel like I fell off the wagon, then it dragged me straight on through til Tuesday and I just woke up somewhere after having been unconscious for the past few days. I didn't eat anything fried, but my portion sizes went unchecked, and I did have a bit too much in the sweets department. Plus I was running around between different places and missed my workouts.  Anyone else have their weekend blow up on them? Looking forward to getting back on track, new goal "don't let the weekend get away from me" I'm 0-2 since I started this challenge.

I am right there with you!  I never realized just how much ice cream my family (and I) eat!  And every day, all weekend!  I did keep up with the workouts though.  Between biking, swimming and running, it was a fairly active weekend.

I am 0-2 also. Never should have said no ice cream!

42:14...6:46 pace.  Not my fastest, but it was midnight and it was 80 degrees, 70% humidity, and no wind.  So...SOCKS can tell you how comfortable this race usually is.

It was good enough, however, for 23rd overall out of 495, and good enough to win the 35-39 age group!  So...that's two age group wins in two races since I started my better eating plan!!  WOOT!

I am finishing up my week 2 today.  I haven't done any analysis, but I do know that I ate a little badly over the holiday weekend.  Not HORRIBLE...but I didn't exactly adhere to all the rules.  I will say though, I've been VERY good about staying away from soda.  I haven't even WANTED it lately.  YAY!!

Well, like a few others (RI & Threejs) I had a tough weekend last weekend & am now back on track with one very good day of eating/working out under my belt. Definitely bummed because I had basically lost 5 pounds & gained it back because of poor food choices over the weekend (which stretched to Tuesday - ugh!).

But I'm back with the healthy eating challenge now. And I will stay the course. Best wishes for good racing & good workouts and above all good food choices this weekend to everyone.

I have to find my link to the Google doc again...it's buried somewhere in my email. It appears that I've lost 2 pounds thus far, so I'm happy about that.  Sugar reduction hasn't gone as planned, but it's been significantly (for me) reduced, so that's good.

Congrats on your race Q. Fell off the wagon this weekend. Not intentional but couldn't get the fruit and veggies down due to a stomach bug and eventually sunk down to drinking flat coke when everything else wasn't working. I'm back on the wagon and I managed to salvage a decent race.

Thanks for the props!!  And OUCH on the stomach bug. Hope you're feelin' better...stomach crap is so demoralizing...takes forever to feel better.

I am here to say THANKS to everyone for being so much motivation for me!  I'm really feeling great!  I've pretty much cut out the gluten, except for a little here and there (and of course my cheat day) but I definitely feel better!

I managed to do an ENTIRE WEEK of CrossFit workouts along with my regular s/b/r training.  My body is working better, I feel stronger and leaner!  Tonight I did a short brick (11 mile bike, 1 mile run) before teaching my usual Tuesday boot camp and I blistered the course at 21.5mph and clicked off a 6:50 mile afterwards.  I felt like superman!! 

So...let's hear some more successes!  Hope everyone's having a great week!

I managed to PR my Olympic swim time this weekend by 2 minutes (despite stomach problems) I think my overall better eating is making for higher quality training opportunities which translates to better racing performance.

A special shout out to Kim for the nutrition advice. You helped me realize that I wasn't eating enough to fuel my workouts.

Nice job Q, keep it up!

I ran for the first time in two weeks yesterday, sprained my ankle about a month ago and was getting pain every time I tried to run so I took some time off. Run went great, dropped a full minute off of my pace from previous runs this year. Ankle still felt a bit off but feels ok today so should be ready to go again Thursday. Swim/bike slated for this afternoon. I just wish this humidity would clear up, it's been 90+ and humid everyday for close to two weeks Tongue out

Okay, I know it's only Thursday, but I'm having a super fantastic week so far. I did a little "pace series" race last night - just a 3K - and my pace was even a little FASTER than last week! I'm a back-of-the packer, so any increase in speed, even if it's just a little bit, and just during a short race is great news. Of course the remainder of my run (needed another 2.2 miles)  was slower, but that's okay. I'll take it. I also managed to get in two mile swims with a bike commute from home to Y & from Y to work this week. Really pleased with my effort. Makes me want to stay on track/stay the course even more. I love this challenge!! Thanks for "being here" and making it possible )

ANOTHER age group win for me!!  I've been feeling so awesome these past couple weeks!!  I'm sure my better nutrition choices are what is fueling my wins lately.  OK, the 7 days in a row of CrossFit helped too, but seriously, all the workouts in the world aren't gonna help if I don't eat right.

It was a trail 5K this morning...20:53...8th of 283 overall...1st in AG M35-39.  Pretty happy with this time since it was mostly on trails and it was 85 degrees and humid as hell at the start.  I guess that's why it's called the RUN THRU HELL...

This has been an awesome challenge so far!!  I can't tell ya how motivated I've been by everyone!   YAY!! 

How's everyone else doing this week?  I just looked at the spreadsheet and I didn't see much posted.  I've been guilty of that myself.  I filled in this week's info tho.

I just filled in my info this morning, doing pretty well. Weekends are still a problem for me, this time of year it seems I have a cookout or party to go to every week. Also having a hard time getting motivated to swim, odd for me since I used to love swimming. Other than that I'm still losing weight and my running is improving. Ran an 8:57min/mi avg (3.3 miles) last week, still not fast but I've been in the 10min/mile camp for the past couple of years so seeing 8 anything is great progress.

This challenge has really helped me center my meals around produce. We buy a lot of it but I used to throw a lot of it away at the end of the week. Trying to get 7 servings or more in a day has forced me to get creative. The only thing I've struggled with is getting the produce and calories needed. Lots of fruit and vegetables tend to make me full fast leaving me short in the calories department. I've tried packing spinach and fruit into smoothies (to up calories and get the produce) or adding avocado, nuts or dried fruit to salads and various dishes to up the calorie count but there are days I'm too low and my energy level suffers.  

Any ideas? I have no idea how people like Michael Phelps or Tour de France riders are able to get down 9000 calories on a regular basis. Are they not eating as many servings of fruits and vegetables to make room for higher density food?

I'm trying to keep carbs 50-55% fats 25-30% and protein 20-25%

If it were me I'd plan for a treat a day.  Like a Snickers Bar on days your really low on calories.  Pick something that you truely enjoy that you normally don't eat.  I actually think those top tier athletes eat about 80-90% healthy and then supplement with high calorie foods that aren't necessarily good for you but not necessarily horrible in moderation.  Of course the other thing is to add the high calorie healthy fats such as olive oil, avacado's, etc but sounds like your already on top of that.  It sure is a fine line between too many and too few calories when your trying to push your body to the limit.
