Total Time = 1h 32m 4s
Overall Rank = 140/289
Age Group = Men's 40-44
Age Group Rank = 22/47
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:40am to eat oatmeal and have some coffee, then off to pick-up Richard and ride out to the race together.
Event warmup:

200 yards swim. It's too hard to really warm-up when you are 3-4 waves into the race.
Swim
  • 09m 9s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started on the left front just besides a guy in a full body speed suit figuring he would be out fast. I was right and we took off like a bullet. I hung onto his feet until the second buoy and then lost him as we got caught in a big group from previous waves. I had a lot of trouble spotting him again as my goggles were fogged up and all I could we white caps. Both from the tops of waves and our cap color. I couldn't tell which was which and the fast guy was lost. After the turn I was able to settle in and just pass people as I got closer to the finish. Rough conditions but not too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Get new goggles or de-fogger.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Decent transition but I didn't do a speed transition with the shoes on the bike since I haven't done a race in years and I haven't been practicing. So, I put the bike shoes on and ran with the bike (no socks).
What would you do differently?:

Practice speed transitions before the race.
Bike
  • 45m 57s
  • 14 miles
  • 18.28 mile/hr
Comments:

I have done ZERO speed work on the bike, instead focusing on building base for IMFL in November. It showed in the wind as I just couldn't hold the speeds I was used to on this course. I might have also gone out too hard on the second leg of the course with a side wind and powered up the first small hill. It hurt when we turned into the wind and had to climb the 3 hills going into the wind. By the time we made the turn going back to the highway my legs were feeling toasty. I also underestimate the false flats on the way back and really struggled here as people in my AG started to finally pass me. I jammed the frontage road just like everyone else with that awesome tailwind. I looked once and noticed that I was going 34mph. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough course left to bring the overall average up. I was 2mph slower over the course than in years past.
What would you do differently?:

T.I.T.S. with speed work
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

I decided to sit and put socks on before running since I detest running on crushed granite without them. That slowed me down but I was up and running out of T2 with hat and race belt in no time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing except maybe toughen up my feet.
Run
  • 32m
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I suck at running and today was even worse as we ran into a tough 20mph+ wind. Couple that with my over-aggressiveness on the bike in the same conditions and it made for a slow run.
What would you do differently?:

The same as usual, train more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around talking to friends and watching others finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Genetics

Event comments:

I really like this local race and don't have any issue with Glenn (the Race Director) and all the timing issues that they had this year. The company that screwed it up (All Sports Timing) was pushed on him when RunFar decided not to do smaller races anymore. I give this race a "3" score because it's just not that scenic or spectator friendly. However, it's so close to home and the location where we train all the time that I can't NOT do the race.

Good Job on a tough day!  The wind was nuts and the water was pretty choppy!  I hope they get their timing issues sorted out for next year.
