Total Time = 2h 39m 15s
Overall Rank = 97/714
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 29/82
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30. Ate a bagel with honey and some fruit. packed up the car and headed from the hotel to transition.
Event warmup:

Swam a couple of out and backs near the start. Never really got a good warm up
Swim
  • 26m 9s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started out in front and had to battle for position until rounding the first buoy. Arms were tired and I settled in to a moderate rhythm until I could recover. I think I finally felt warmed up on the last leg and picked up my pace.
What would you do differently?:

Do more of a warm up.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Had trouble getting the suit off.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 46s
  • 30 miles
  • 21.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I think the interval work I've been doing has improved my biking. I raced at 190lbs today and it didn't seem to affect my climbing at all. My legs never quit on me and my heart rate was much lower then expected. I might have been able to push the first 5 miles a little harder.
What would you do differently?:

Not ride 35 miles the day before my race
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

I lost some time dismounting and getting into transition.
What would you do differently?:

learn to dismount with feet out of shoes.
Run
  • 46m 50s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

I injured my Left foot (Stress Reaction) and wasn't able to run for 6-7 weeks. I've only been back running for about 5 weeks, with the first 3 weeks just easy jogging on the grass.
I am very pleased with my results considering my injury. I had no foot pain during the race and was able to hold my pace throughout the race.
I was passed by my team mate Julie at about mile 2, I tried to stay with her but couldn't manage it. She ended up taking 2nd in her age group and 5th overall Female!

Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with the other Z Team members and enjoyed some of the good food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Foot injury

Course: I wasn't sure how hard to ride since I've never done this distance before. I knew there were a couple of climbs halfway so I figured I'd push a moderate pace the first 5 miles, not pushing the rollers too hard. Since I started in the last wave I passed quite a few riders along the way. After mile 5, I increased my effort and pushed the first climb. My legs felt good and they recovered quickly on the first descent. I then got into a good rhythm for the second climb and seemed to feel stronger as I approached the summit. Bombed the last short descent just before the steep climb over the dam. That descent really got my adrenalin going and it seemed like the final steep climb went by quick. I was out of the saddle for the last 1/4 mile or so. The last 14 or so miles went by quick and I didn't really notice the headwind other than to watch about 4 guys blatantly drafting off my teammate Julie. I shook my head at them and encouraged her to drop them.

Great job Joe!  You seem to have made some good improvement with your run...nice!  You should have taken the numbers of the guys drafting your teammate.

Thanks Ray!  Probably should have, nothing pisses me off more than a blatant draft.
