Training for IMKY. Following Be Iron Fit plan. Have stuck pretty much exactly to plan so far.

Next week I am leaving to go to St Simon Island, Ga. Not sure about access to a pool at this point.

I am looking to actually spend some time with the family and not make the whole vacation about training. Sun calls for a HIM. Since i am out of town I was thinking that I would just ride 56 and run 13.1 omitting the swim. For the week I was going to just do the ride/run workouts and not swim.

I feel very comfortable in the pool, feel great about where my stroke and endurance are for the swim portion.

If the beach there is conducive, I may put in a few shorter ocean swims but I am not betting on it.

Am I killing myself by taking a week off of swimming this close to a IM?

I am doing IMKY as well, also doing Be Iron Fit.  heading to beach last week of July.  I am planning on doing the same thing as you.  Wil swim in ocean as much as possible, do bike and run portion of plan.  Only problem I have is that the coast of New Jersey is a lot less hilly than home in Indiana or Louisville course.  Enjoy vacation, train as much as you can, see you on 4th street!

I am going on vacation to the beach the first week of August and have a race 2 weeks after I get back. I am planning on bringing my bike and doing morning bike rides and runs (1 or 2 bricks). I will be in a flat area with a huge bike lane that goes for many miles. I probably will not swim because I do not want to swim in the ocean by myself. I say if you are comfortable with you swim, do the biking and running and you should be fine.

I thought open water swimming was the reason for beach vacations. I swam here last summer:

Which part of Indiana you live in? I am in Greenville. Just outside of New Albany.

Thanks for the replies, I am a little skeered about swimming in the ocean by myself. This is a large private beach. No other people, no lifeguards, just Jaws.

Great article here on avoiding de-training, along with some reassurance that doing just one sport for a week or two can still help retain your overall fitness.

Holy cow, you want to do a ~5h workout, yet you say the vacation is about vacation not training?
I think my wife woudl kill me if I proposed that.

Good for you for following a plan closely, I don;t understand why many buy these plans then change everything. However, don't you have some flexibility to do this race or simulation in 2 weeks? Your IM is 7 weeks away.

When I go on vacation, it's run-only. Good use of time, easy from a logistical standpoint.

There will be no loss of fitness without swimming for a week. If you are a decent swimmer and have been at it for a while, you will get the feel of the water back very quickly (minutes) after a short period out of the pool.

Vacation is supposed to be about relaxing and having fun.  Recharging your mental batteries is important not just for your normal life (work, family, etc.) but also for your training/triathlon life.

Go into it with the idea that when convenient, you'll fit in a workout.  If the workouts are a nuisance or in the way of your vacation, then don't do them.  Keep it fun.  Obviously, the more you can do the better, but don't ruin a vacation because of your hobby.

If you've managed to follow the rest of your training plan well, then one week of unstructured training isn't going to kill you.  It's no ideal, but such is life.

If I am in a race specific training cycle and a vacation is planned, I plan to train while on vacation. For me, the vacation is a break from work and home responsibilities, not from the fun of training.

DH and I have the exercise in the morning, relax at the beach in the afternoon vacation/IM training plan.  It looks like this:  Every day of vacation, one of us gets up for a 1 hour run at 5:30 while the other makes the coffee, gets their bike ready and rides 50 miles (easy and convenient loop from the condo) when spouse #1 returns after the sun has risen, finishing at the lovely outdoor shower on the way to meet spouse #1/kids at the beach before lunch.  The next day, we switch who does each sport and the kids are only marginally impacted.

This works because we are early risers.  And, sure, a 1 hour run is lower than usual daily IM volume, but if you are doing 4 in a week, that is approximately normal run volume.  3-4 fifty mile bikes in a week is a strong week for us.  There is a local YMCA for lap-swimming but it is $10 so we rarely take advantage of it and I am petrified of swimming in the ocean.  DH may do some ocean swimming while kids and I float nearby.

Every day of vacation, one of us gets up for a 1 hour run at 5:30

We shift time zones when we go to the beach so 5:30 feels like 6:30 back home.

I don't want folks to think we are crazy.
