Pre-race routine:

Out the door at 3:00 AM for the 60 miles drive over to PP. Had some water and a SlimFast shake (love these things pre workout/race). Nervous belly so I had nothing else but water until the start. My first oly!
Event warmup:

Nothing really. Set up transition, walked around, tested the water.
Swim
  • 30m 54s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt I would do a lot better. Been swimming a lot this year and I usually do well with OWS. This race, I got smacked 2x in the head almost immediately and then my wave caugth the tail end of at least 2 waves before us. It was crowded so on the straitaway, I decided to get out of traffic. twice I found myself out by myself and had to stop and re-sight the buoys. The final turn was also the turn for the sprint race so that got a little tricky.
What would you do differently?:

Better sighting. I probably swam 100 yards total off-course, so that's almost 2 minutes.
Transition 1
  • 03m 52s
Comments:

Just not fast with these, although I had a goal to be out of there in 4 minutes or less. Had no issues, just slow.
What would you do differently?:

Practice
Bike
  • 1h 19m 55s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.66 mile/hr
Comments:

This is a good bike for me. I did 18.8 at a sprint 2 weeks ago and was happy to hold this pace over the 25 miles. Getting much strongeron the bike. Had a Gu about 5 miles in as I felt a little low on power. Drank quite a bit. It was not hot, but I knew the run was going to be unshaded, so I made a conscious effort to drink on the bike. Stood up on one of the hills, more to just stretch my legs and rear.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep practicing. I am happy with this time.
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Pretty good time for me considering the size of the transistion area.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 58m 18s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good off the bike. It started to get hot just becuase we were out on the highway with no shade. Was running 9:00 miles the first 2 miles, which is a good race pace for me. Then I started to slow down. No water stations beyween miles 2 and 4 and I could have used some. Really started to drag by mile 4, got some water but that did not help. By Mile 5, I was at 9:40 pace for the previous mile. Just hung on to the end.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks? I felt great off the bike but faded at the end. It's my first oly so I definately got some lessones learned.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a cold towel and some Gatorade. Walked around as my quads felt really tight. Stretched a bit, found some shade and got another Gatorade. Finally felt like eating so I had some bagels. ANother water and I was fine.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More training and start learning about proper nutrition.

Event comments:

Well run race. Plenty of volunteers and everyhting went off on time. Course was well marked. Could have used another water station on the run. Most likely do this race again.

Congrats on your first Oly. That final turn on the swim where the sprint and oly met wet quite crowded.
