Pre-race routine:

left at 5 to get there just after 6:30. Had a coffee and bagle with egg, lettuce and cheese. Also had a power bar and bottle of weak gotorade on the way up.

Event warmup:

1km walk barefoot on really rough gravelly pavement. 100-200m swim
Swim
  • 49m 53s
  • 2000 meters
  • 02m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was the test to see if I could swim the 2km and I did. No clinging to boyies, kayak or floating on my back. Did a few stroke of breast stoke mainly to try and figure out where I was.
What would you do differently?:

sight much better. Develop a pattern of breathing and sighting so I can stay on course. OWS was fine, no panic or other problems and I prefer it to the pool but I have to get the sighting dialed in.
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

Got stuck on the timing chip with my wetsuit which cost me some time. Didnt have an issue finding my bike. Was sure to put helmet on before unwracking bike. Ran with bike, happy to have mountain bike shoes.
What would you do differently?:

have to practice taking wetsuit off quickly. dry feet better and make sure sand and rock are off.
Bike
  • 2h 06m
  • 55 kms
  • 26.19 km/hr
Comments:

felt sick when I first headed out on the bike but tried to drink a lot to rehydrate. Initial plan called for 2 bottles for the entire ride but grabbed a gatorade at the water station. Had 2 gels + 1 cut up power bar. Had a tough time with getting power bar down. Might stick to gels next time. Rear deraileur was cranky and sometimes didnt shift well. Also overgeared and spent too much energy on the uphills. Will try putting MTB bike cog set and see if it works for 70.3
What would you do differently?:

leave water bottle holder on. be sure to test ride after doing clean and lube. try different cog set.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

shoes went on well, changed sunglasses put on hat. off and running
Run
  • 1h 30m
  • 15 kms
  • 06m  min/km
Comments:

running was difficult as it always is. very hilly course and I ended up walking up a lot of the hills.carried a water bottle which I drank but otherwise drank water and gatorade from the course.
Post race
Warm down:

walked mainly and did some light stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

gearing on the bike or strength to help in the hills.

Event comments:

very well run, they seemed to try and make it fun. very tough course and real challenge for sure.

Sighting was really really bad, I was way off course and over 75m away from some of the boyies. I am sure I swam about 2500m total. started right at the back of the pack and settled into an easy pace. Could have gone faster but wanted to conserve energy too. swam into/over some people at the start. got a decent size bruise on my leg from an errant kick from someone.
