Total Time = 1h 35m 39s
Overall Rank = 635/791
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 45/56
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am, had cup of coffee, drove to race with friend who was also racing.
Event warmup:

walked
Swim
  • 10m 44s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Found sighting a bit of a challenge, but felt pretty good throughout swim. Got out front early on so was not as "violent" as I thought it would be. It helped that I was in the "beginner wave"! Came out of water in top 10 of wave!
What would you do differently?:

Should have warmed up in water before race but was socializing too much. The water wasn't too too cold, but it would have helped me acclimate quicker.
Transition 1
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

T1 was ok - had to sit down in transition to pull wetsuit off feet. Put on helmet and running shoes ok...
What would you do differently?:

Want to try cycling shoes/pedals next year, that is my goal!
Bike
  • 47m 42s
  • 12 miles
  • 15.09 mile/hr
Comments:

While I was one of the first racers out of the water for swim, I was passed by MANY on the bike! I knew this would happen and it was really frustrating. I rode a hybrid for my first tri and felt like it was so heavy compared to a road bike. My goal for next year's season is to find a lighter bike to race on! Overall, the bike leg was fine.
What would you do differently?:

See above - I'd like a faster/lighter bike in the future! :) Oh, and another goal for next year is to wear cyling shoes/pedals to clip in.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

T2 was relatively easy since I was already wearing my running shoes for the bike leg.
What would you do differently?:

New bike, cycling shoes and pedals! More outside rides on bike, too!
Run
  • 33m 12s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 10m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

First 2 miles were a challenge b/c my legs were tight and heavy. Just kept chugging along and eventually they loosened up at last 1 1/2 miles. The race started out overcast but clouds cleared by run portion and the run course was HOT and SUNNY. Good thing I hat a hat and grabbed water at each water station (which probably slowed me down but kept me hydrated!). I probably could have run a little faster pace but I just wanted to feel good at the end of the race so I kept my pace comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Probably do more bike/run bricks in training to get used to running off the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

BIKE BIKE BIKE!!

Event comments:

Well it's the best one I've ever done b/c it's the ONLY one I've done so far. I think the race went off a little bit later than planned but not too bad. Really fun! Saw a lot of people I knew from town and training. The race raises money for JDRF (juvenile diabetes research foundation) for type 1 diabetes, which I have so I think this will be a race I do annually from now on. Just a really fun tri for a good cause. Senator Scott Brown, Olympic swimmer Gary Hall, Jr (a type 1 diabetic himself), Olympic triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker and Dick and Rick Hoyt all raced which was very cool to see!

Congratulations! You are now a triathlete. Sounds like a wonderful race.  Overall your fitness didn't limit you, so if you are hooked and start getting new equipment you will be killing it by next year.  Way to go.
