Subject: What went wrong? (bad training ride)

Today on my planned bike ride I came within calling the ambulance.  I'm still not sure what it was and hopefully its a one time thing.

I left and had a very small cramp on the right stomach.  I thought nothing of it and went on my ride.  It progressively got worse, and after about 10 miles my cramp was now my whole stomach area and my right lower back.   I decided to stop and turn around but it was too late.  About 4 miles short of where I parked the pain was so bad I just got off my bike and layed there in pain.  My abdominal muscles were tight and I'd get pains where it felt like someone was hitting me in the stomach with a sledgehammer.

I did find it disturbing about 40 people passed me while I was on the ground and only one asked if I was okay.

I ended up calling my wife, who picked me up.  According to her I was dehydrated and stopped sweating.  I never felt dehydrated, and drank plenty prior.  Also, this was only 10 miles into a ride, though it was 97 degrees out, but I've ridden in that temperature quite a bit without any problems.  I had the symptoms of dehydration but it didn't add up for me.

I did eat a burger and fries for lunch, and a frappuccino for breakfast.  I think it may have something to do with it but I seem to be in the minority.

Why take a chance.  Call your Doc, and let them know what happened.  As men we are notorious for waiting to long to go to a professional, and then wind up with something serious that could have been caught early.  Get checked out.  Probably nothing, but don't risk it.

I hate going to the doctor, so I don't take telling others to do so lightly.  You gotta go to the doctor.

between the extra salt in the fries and the caffeine from the frap, perhaps you were retaining water.  Do you normally eat like that before a ride?

Classic gallbladder attack symptoms. The pain is incredible. You need to get a sonogram or MRI on it and see if it needs removing. If it is your gallbladder, it will only get worse... believe me.

If you stopped sweating like your wife says thats a sign of a heat stroke, but probably not the case. If you had truly stopped sweating medical attention with loads of IV fluids would be the only thing to really reverse it at that point. Dehydrated maybe, stopped sweating no.

I agree with this.  It sounds just like what I went through.  I had my gall bladder removed May 2nd and I feel great.  No more pains.

Get to your doctor and let him/her help you.

x1000 for the doctor.  I had similar symptoms 3 weeks ago and it turned out to be a kidney stone.  Could be gall stone, appendicitis, back strain, etc.  Some things will go away on their own, some things will get worse.  Why take the chance?

I'll echo the gallbladder/kidney people.

Anytime you have a pain that starts to spread and involve larger and larger areas like that, something systemic is going on. A cramp is usually isolated to a single muscle or possibly muscle group, when you start spreading like that it's a larger involvement.

Get to a doc and have it checked out.

i'm also with the gallbladder/kidney folks, having dealt with both in the past. i will say that having a kidney stone is the single most painful thing i've ever felt and it definitely radiates through your back. either way, i'd get checked out.

It hasn't came back as bad as it has that day but still had some mild symptoms.  I'm going to the doc next week; I hope it doesn't put me out for long; if it is kidney stones or gall bladder, how long can I expect to be out?  I'm currently doing 12-14 hours a week and don't really want to take two steps back.

Same exact thing happened to my dad on a motorcycle ride.  Got off the bike at a fast food restaurant and laid on the ground in excruciating pain.  No one even offered to help him.  Luckily he carries a pen and paper all the time.  He wrote down emergency contact phone numbers in case he passed out.  The pain finally subsided enough to call home and we had to go get him.  Straight to the ER and in for gall bladder removal.

I was thinking gall bladder as well.  When I had mine removed I was in the hospital for 4 days while they waited for the swelling in my pancreas to go down, and then out of commission for about 5 days before returning to light duty.

As I mentioned before, 2 weeks ago I had pretty similar symptoms.  The doctor gave me a Rx for pain, but after a couple days I didn't need it anymore.  I only lost two days of training.  Once the stone got close to the bladder  I didn't have any pain at all.  I don't know if that's what's happening for you, but if it is drink lots and lots of water.  If it's a gall stone then try to reduce your fat intake.  Good luck man; I feel your pain.

+1 on cholecystitis (gallbladder). Could also be appendicitis, kidney stone, or a huge number of things.

What is in order is a doctor's appointment. If you don't have a doctor, then go to an ER.

If it was appendicitis, he'd know it by now. When appendicitis gets to the point of locking up the abdomen in pain, it's a life threatening situation, as the next step is a burst appendix. And, the pain from that doesn't go away.
