I'm wearing a tri shorts and shirt for my first tri next weekend. No wetsuit. I plan to wear the shirt and shorts for the whole event. Do I pin my number to my shirt before the swim?

The other option I can think of is to swim in my tri shorts and sports bra, but ewww yucko. Would rather cover up the flabby bits if I can Or wear a different tech shirt in the water and change shirts in T1.

What do other ladies do that don't wear wetsuits in the swim? Guys just don't wear their shirt in the swim and it's a no brainer.

Do yourself a favor and spend the $7 on a race belt. I've done many races with and without wetsuit and never worn my number in the water. Most races you don't need your number until the run so I put my race belt on in T2. Some require it on the bike so I have put it on in T1. Tri clothes are too expensive to be putting pins through.

Yes we do. Tri top and tri shorts the whole race. Most of the females wear their sports bra under the tri top or tech shirt and just wear it all for the whole race. Do not wear cotton

Get a race belt for your race number:

You can pick up a race number belt very cheap (<$10).  Attach the number to that and leave it in transition.  It's fast an easy to put on.  I wouldn't swim with the number on because they're not designed to be waterproof.  Even with a wetsuit, the paper could tear or whatever and create a problem.

I got a race belt for a buck, but that was through a promo with TriSports ... shipping will cost you more than the belt.

I agree, get the belt. If you can't get one in time, threading a shoelace through the holes works fine and you can just grab it in transition, put it on, and tie it fast in a double knot.

By "shirt" do you mean a specific tri top or just a regular sports shirt? It sounds like a regular shirt ...

Get thee to Target (or somewhere cheap) and buy a tight sports tank or running tank to wear over your sports bra. No drag in the water, no worries, covers your perceived flab (NOBODY is looking, I guarantee this, they are only thinking of themselves and exerting themselves in their race), wear for whole race.

It is a MAJOR PITA to try to put a shirt on or change shirts when wet in transition.

Anyhow, whatever you do ... good luck and HAVE FUN at your first!

A race belt would be the best solution (put it around your waist in T1). But you really might want to invest in a tri top that you wear for all three events. Even if you decide that you don't want to do tris very often (or ever again!), they are still comfortable choices for biking and running. They usually have a built-in bra component (though I know some larger women prefer to wear a sports bra underneath) so you could conceivably do the whole race in one outfit without putting on/taking off clothes. If you look hard you can probably find one to cover your torso so "perceived flab" shouldn't be an issue.  If you are wearing a shirt instead, you can pin the number to it ahead of time and put it on in T1. Just don't forget!
