Subject: Priorities (Why sometimes junk miles are the best miles)

My 10 year old granddaughter is visiting from Oklahoma and at breakfast she told me she wanted to go bike riding with me.

I started to ponder how to explain to her that I was training and that it's not the same as just peddling around and besides, you don't even have a bike.

And then (luckily) I just slapped my self upside the head and said, "Let's go get you a bike."

So off to (insert name of large evil mass merchant here) we went and lo and behold there amongst a zillion other mountain bikes is a 30 pound bike with 20 inch tires that has her name on it.  One bike and one helmet later and we are driving home.

We had been biking almost 25 minutes, and we were just two blocks from home, before she mentioned how tired her legs were and pleaded, "We've probably already gone a mile Grandpa, that should be far enough."

When we got home and I showed her RunKeeper's display showed 3.55 miles she did the whole jaw-drop thing and ran inside to tell her mom that she had trained with Grandpa for more!than!three!and!one!half!miles!

So - today I biked 3.55 miles in 25:57 and I'm calling it my best workout of the year.

And for those who say "pics or it didn't happen", here's my granddaughter's first bike that has brakes on the handlebars and the pedals can spin backwards (wow was she impressed by that):

You get to cross post this in the recruiting thread as well, since you are now bringing in new members to the community.

Also, I have to say, I like the foot stands on the wheels.  That ought to help keep others out of her space in transition.

ha! That's cute! Well good for you for getting her hooked on the sport. Give her a few days before the century though - those legs need a little recovery time ;-)

Love it.

I hate when people say "life got in the way" about missed training. This is life. Congrats that you didn't let training get in the way of life.

That's sweet!  I try to get in a lot of miles like that (riding with niece, riding to dinner/groceries, etc).

Great job, Grandpa! That is a beautiful bike. She kept up a pretty good pace for her first time out.

Today Grace woke up and wanted to go ride!  We did five miles in 45 minutes.  And she kept wanting to race—"Grandpa, first one to the (phone pole/stop sign/yellow house) gets a point!"

I managed to get one point, she got six.  And we worked on rules of the road, she slows down at ALL intersections, even if the "intersection" is just a 90º bend in the road to the left or right.

Took all three of my kids out with me.  Hooked up the trailer to my bike, had the boys in the trailer while my daughter rode along on the side walk.  Her first real ride and experience with the wobbly legs.

We ended up making four bike rides over a three day visit.

To end the saga, on our last ride before she had to go home to Oklahoma, she (somewhat politely) requested that I not wear "those" shorts.

Seems that 10 year old's don't like to be seen in the company of spandex-clad old people.

Awesome stuff!!!

My two "best" races so far this year were the two fun runs I did with my 4 1/2 yr. old son.

Do Jorge's plan this winter and you'll reverse those numbers next year!

To paraphrase a pretty common question, "What is more important, the miles in your life, or the life in your miles?"

Those are really the best miles you can do, aren't they? I'd trade any of the training hours to ride with my family. Those are the ones that I enjoy the most.

BTW, she now has one sweet ride there! I hope you get to have many more enjoyable miles with her.
