Comments: Started out pretty good. First mile clicked off at 5:50 which is about average for me. Pace slowed a little bit...then I hit the dreaded turn around and *again* I lost 2-3 seconds off my pace which would haunt me later. Mile two clicked off at 6:09 so I knew I still had a chance at getting under 19 which is a goal for me but I knew I had to pick it up the last mile. I tried but the legs didn't want to go much faster. Mile 3 was 6:07. Trying to do the math in my head to get under 19 and knew I had to book it. Gave it all I had the last 200 yards. Clock was still in the 18's as I got closer...but then I saw it...the dreaded 19. Looked at my watch as I crossed...19:01. F Me!!! Oh well, still 18 second PR and I knew I was no where near my best fitness for a 5k so I was happy. What would you do differently?: Try to figure out how to go around a cone turnaround without slowing down so damn much. Maybe not have two margaritas at midnight?? Nah. Post race
Warm down: Jogged backwards on the course to run in my wife. She also had a PR of almost 2 minutes. Hit the impressive post-race food buffet and took full advantage of the unlimited free beer. ;-) Stuck around to get AG medal then hit the road back to Ocean City for some beach time. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not have bronchitis for a month and be able to continue speedwork! Since this race is when I am on vacation, I doubt too highly if will actually take this too seriously. Event comments: Good race but they severely under-estimated the number of participants. Ran out of shirts long before I got registered. Found out after I got home that the guy who won the race was Michael Wardian, the top US ultra-marathoner! Dude is mighty fast in a 5k also (15:35)! Even at 11pm the night before, i still hadn't decieded if I wanted to race this 5k or just pace my wife to a PR. Month-long recovery from brochitis has put a dent in my fitness and I hadn't done any speedwork in 6 weeks. Night before race we had a typical pre-race dinner: Thrashers fries, Fishers carmel corn, and margaritas at Tequila Mockingbird! LOL. Woke up, wasn't hungover so laced up the racing flats. Breakfast of coffee, PB toast, & banana,.
Got there at 7:30 and there were about 200 people in front of me registering the day of. Ugh. Finially got signed up, but they ran out of shirts. Ugh. Quick jog around the block to start warming up . Come around the corner and realized everyone is already lined up. Look at watch and see it is 7:55. Opps. No stretching today! Squeezed up to the second row. Ready or not...
