Ok, epic fail at the first post.  here's a second shot...if you don't get it right, tri, tri again!

Hi All,

Talk to me about sunscreen! Here's the story...I'm working on a summer internship project and luckily I've been placed in the sports category! Namely, endurance sports.  So excited that I get to work with my favorite peeps!

My job, to learn as much about sports sunscreen usage as I possibly can.  What you like? What you hate? What you wish existed? Do you like sprays, lotions, sticks? When do you use it?  Before the swim, after the swim?  What about on training days?  Where do you keep it?  What brand do you love? Does it matter?  Anything you can think of that regards sunscreen- put it here!!

I think this thread will help others find products they love and it will help with my project?!

Also, as an FYI, the FDA is changing their take on sun screen...

read about it here:

http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/BuyingUsingMedicineSafely/UnderstandingOver-the-CounterMedicines/ucm258468.htm

Thanks all!!

Amanda

Check the format of sunscreen you prefer to use.  example, if you love spray but use a face stick for your face, click both.  Please explain your usage and comment! If my project goes well, I may get to PM a few of you and have you try free product!!!  Thanks!

I really like spray because it goes on easy and doesn't make my hands greasy. I just use CVS brand sport spray.

I usually put sunscreen on it the morning before I put my clothes on so I don't miss parts. If it really loooks like a sunny day i will reapply pre race.

Lotion, lots of lotion.  The sprays make my skin feel tight but they are super convenient and easy to apply but I still stick to the lotion.  It is hot and sunny where I live so you will know if you miss a spot for sure.  I also apply it to my face, neck and ears.  I use whatever brand we have around the house for when we go to the pool, I am guessing it is banana boat or coppertone sport.

I'm a big fan of the sports sprays.  Works great except it's hard to tell if you missed a spot.  Did a 4hr ride the other day and no burn EXCEPT a couple spots on my back that I missed....ouch!

Have yet to find a decent face product that is sweat proof(doesn't require frequent reapplication) and doesn't cause breakouts.

I swear by Blue Lizard products.  They work better than anything else I've ever used, and I'm in the Florida sun (GO NOLES!!!111ONE!!! by the way).

I prefer lotion. Primarily because I always felt like there is alot of waste with the spray. Half goes on your bod and the other half goes on the ground, or your clothing, or your beach towel, or the person sitting beside you! Plus I like having someone rub the lotion on for me!  Smile

I added gel as an option as I love the ones made by Bullfrog.

I use spray and lotion. I love spray, but there's times where I've used it and totally thought I covered myself, when all that happened was that I ran out of fluid and was spraying myself with mostly air. That meant burns or really dark tans. More often than not I'll spray myself then use lotion for the more sensitive areas, like the lower back.

I rarely use anything when I swim. Even an hour and a half, which is usually the longest I go, is not long enough for me to suffer any burns. I definitely use it on the bike and long runs though.

I will admit, unless it's very early in the year and/or I will be out for a long time (or I am, say, visting FL in March)... I typically don't use any. When I do, it's usually an 8 and a lotion.

My face lotion does have an spf in it, though (oil of olay).

As a fairly hairy person I find it easier to apply spray to body and limbs rather than lotion.  Prefer the Bullfrog Marathon Mist.  Sea & Ski used to have a foam kind that I liked but haven't seen it in stores for a couple of years.

I use Scape lotion on my face for better coverage and higher SPF.

For lip balm I prefer the kind that comes in a little pot with a screw top rather than the stick kind, so it doesn't melt all over my bag if it gets left out in the sun or a hot car.

I spray before traing rides and races with clothing on.  I use 30 because it is a Sport Spray, was on sale, and in a multi-pack.  I would use lotion but I worry about the day I don't have spray and no one to get my back.  I assume with a spray that I can get everywhere with a decent coat.  some people seem to use a whole can though for one application.

It is my understanding that anything over 30 is all marketing hype.

This is really great information.  What if a spray existed that you could see the coverage?  they have lotions like this for kids- they go on a certain color (purple) and then vanish in the sun.  Would that be interesting to everyone?  It seems that sprays are really a favorite because people don't have to touch them and they are convenient, but many feel its hard to tell if you have full coverage.

I use California Baby Sunblock Stick on my face and the Target brand spray on my arms and shoulders. Legs go without.

The stick makes you look like an extra in a zombie movie, but I'm more vain about how I look without sunblock.

I use the Target brand spray on my arms/legs/back but a lotion on my face.  After much trial and error, I found that the Neutrogena Sport for faces sunblock does not make me break out.

I hate that so many "for faces" brands make me break out.  People should not have to choose between acne and sunscreen.

I hate lotions that do not soak in.  The Eucerin Everyday protection leaves a slimey feeling film on the surface of my skin (and their faces causes breakouts).

Coppertone Sport lotion.  Always keep some in my gym/swim bag. I'll also take some in a jersey pocket so I can re-apply if I'm going on a longish (+2 hour) ride.

The Florida sun can fry you in no time flat.  I don't use sunscreen if I'm running in the early morning, but pretty much all the rest of the time.  Some of my worst sun burns in the last couple of years have been on the back of my neck & shoulders while swimming at the pool, when I forgot, or was too lazy, to use the sunscreen.

I use Keihl's on my face.  Expensive, but I'm very breakout prone and this keeps my skin clear.

But I'll admit, I often go without on my body unless I'll be out there for a long time.  Even though I don't burn easily, I know this is bad.  The reason - I have yet to find a sunblock that doesn't make me feel claustriphobic.  I don't know how to describe it other than I get overheated like my skin can't breathe.

I like the smell of the pink kind.  Waterbabies I think?

To be honest, this sounds to me like the kind of thing that people will tell you sounds like an awesome idea and then not buy it--possibly because the feature tends to classify it for them as a kids product, or possibly because they don't really feel like it's a cool enough feature to get them to change their existing preference.

I also think if you were going to offer this it would really and truly have to vanish leaving the same texture as a regular spray, and would have to vanish pretty quickly.  People are probably OK with making their kids walk around all purple for 5 minutes, but probably wouldn't spray themselves purple if it lasted for more than a couple of seconds--in other words, too quickly for someone to snap an iPhone shot and post to Facebook...

Just my opinion, though...

Lotion all the way and my favorite is NoAd, cheap and works well.I've had a hard time finding something for my face that doesn't sting when the sweat runs in my eyes. I have used a powder SPF in the past and I liked it, but that's more for casual days; probably not sufficent for any workout or race day. I do like blue lizard, but it makes me extra white
