Scurrying around getting the kids sorted out. Talked to Jen and Scottie for a bit. Then scurried around sorting the kids out some more. It was actively thundering and lightening-ing so I thought it might be cancelled, but then the RD said the storm was not coming closer and we should just get started. Pretty funny and I was happy to get the race in.
No warmup, which was not a good idea. See the scurrying around with the kids piece above.
Just noticed that this race report format doesn't work at all, so will complete the rest of this here. This was a 300 yard lake swim, 1 mile run, 300 yard swim, 1 mile run, 300 yard swim, 1 mile run race. Very different and fun.
Times:
Swim 1: 4:55 (big wave start, very washing machine-like. Choppy water once we made the turn because of the storm blowing around. Did not get settled in the water at all).
Run 1: 7:12 (Run over beach to shoes, then into sandy shoes and an out-and-back 1 mile run. Felt sluggish in the beginning but good on the back half)
Swim 2: 5:41 (hard to get back into the water because I was winded from the run and having a tough time breathing).
Run 2: 7:09 (Noticed toe rubbed raw from the sand in my shoes but an OK run)
Swim 3: 5:38 (not sure why this was so slow...I think I was just plodding along here at this point- waiting to get to the run. Hard to get into any kind of rhythm)
Run 3: 7:01 (Chris passed me quickly and I looked back to find no men close behind and I was not going to catch anyone so I just ran. Toe was killing me and I was happy to be done. Hard little race. The kids cheered and rang their cow bells every time I went by which was fun).
Total: 37:33.1. Not sure if this is good or bad. Finished 8th out of 33 men and 3rd out of 9 in 30-39 AG (2nd in the 35-39 USAT AG). The guy who came second overall was also in my AG.
Chatted to some people afterwards and then headed home. Some really solid swimmers showed up for this race. I was a little surprised at the strength of the people who showed up. The top 3 men were all around 31 mins, then a group of us between 35 and 38 and then a dropoff. For a low-key race, those 31ers are solid! 5 women out of the 37 beat me, so I guess I was 13th/70 when combining both groups. Nice to catch up with Scottie, who had a shoulder issue on his swim so bagged it for the day, and Jen, who looked strong on the run and won 3rd in her AG.
Overall a fun race. I'll sign up for #3, even though that is 3 days after Washington OLY. That one is a longer swim and a longer run (just one of em though!).
