Sunny
Total Time = 2h 54m 41s
Overall Rank = 353/360
Age Group = athena
Age Group Rank = 11/12
Pre-race routine:

set up transition,10-25 minute run, putting on wetsuit,
Event warmup:

10 minute warm up in the water--easy strokes back and forth in warm up area
Swim
  • 50m
  • 880 meters
  • 05m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

No split times at this race!!! Grrr, I wanted to see how I did on the bike split compared to swimming, but now I just don't know
really bad with the breathing--possibly undiagnosed breathing issue??? There was little to no panic/anxiety. held onto kayaks twice, and was just DONE.
What would you do differently?:

keep on moving--ignore the discomfort and just keep going.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

not too bad, considering how crappy I felt. I just went through it and did what needed to be done.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe try cycle shoes without socks...
Bike
  • 1h 10m
  • 16 miles
  • 13.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Not bad, considering that I was not feeling well breathing-wise...I kept my speed up and managed to pass some people (a first for me). the air quality was also not ideal. My hands were somewhat numb though...Don't know why.
What would you do differently?:

planned my fueling/drinking better. I had the stuff, it was just hard to reach.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

it was hard due to the number of people who were in the transition area---most of them were done with their races, so they were hanging around...
What would you do differently?:

remove feet from shoes--then get off bike..
Run
  • 54m
  • 3 miles
  • 18m  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't run that much, my breathing hurt, so I walked as fast as I could, and ran occasionally.
What would you do differently?:

ignore discomfort and just keep running.
Post race
Warm down:

walking about, standing in line for food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

breathing. My breathing was fairly limited halfway through the swim, and it remained painful/difficult through the rest of the race. My lack of willpower to ignore pain stopped me from performing at my best.

Event comments:

I wish that all of the facilities/drink booths would have stayed open until the last person had made it in...I really wanted some free Jamba Juice, but they were packing up and leaving! All in all, the race was done well and organized well, I just wished I had performed better.

Congrats again Kate -- that's one in the books / hopefully the first of many.

Congrats!   Way to push through despite the breathing issues.  That run course could use a few trees though  at least it was as hot as previous years.

Kate,

A friend of mine reminded me the other day about the endurance horse racing motto: To finish is to win.

You are a winner! Learn from each tri and work on things in between races. This is all such a learning process. Ask your self if you could of come close to finishing a year ago and you'll realize how fit you've become.

It only gets better from here.  Consider a small coffee before a race?  The caffeine dilates your vessels and may help with breathing-ask a doctor what they think about it though
