Age Group Rank = 3/40
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast: 1 bowl Frosted Flakes
Pre-race: 1/2 Cliff bar

Arrived at site 6am, pretty early actually as I got to park on asphalt.
Event warmup:

rode ~2 miles
ran ~1 mile
swam to beach and around a little
Swim
  • 10m
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started on outside, intent was to sight off of other swimmers while breathing, thought it would make up for the extra distance of starting outside (beach also angles slightly away as you go outside), bad choice, it worked pretty well for sighting but didn't make up for the extra distance. Once we were strung out had a hard time sighting to first turn as long course bouys were moved and still visible, turn bouy was virtually same size as others. I swam pretty fast at the start, by no means a sprint but faster than my average pace, dropped the tempo back to a sustainable level before the dock, I think form dropped off pretty bad in the last third of the race as I got passed at the turn and the guy just swam away from me, couldn't even stay in his draft. I wasn't too tired, felt like I was swimming the same as the middle of the race but he was a lot faster at that point.
What would you do differently?:

start on the inside, swim faster. I'm sort of a wetsuit hero, much slower without my super suit, guess that means I need to work more on body position or find colder races.
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Felt slow thru T1 but was actually 3rd fastest overall.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 25m 48s
  • 9 miles
  • 20.93 mile/hr
Comments:

Hello Shawnee Mission Park, nice to see you again, it's been awhile, my that's a big hill you're packing.

The dam hill really slowed me down, I think I saw my Grandma pushing her walker screaming at me, "passing on your left!" I gave up almost 2 minutes to Jim and we are normally pretty close on the bike. This was a depressing ride, i just couldn't push the pace.

Drank 20 oz water and 10 oz G2.
What would you do differently?:

not much, come in to the race better prepared for the conditions.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

another good transition, 4th overall, this one also felt slow. Passed a guy going into the chute, not the bast place to do it but he was going so slow and there was plenty of room. Remembered to unbuckled helmet while running in. I was pretty preoccupied with trying to see how much time I lost on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 16m 52s
  • 2.4 miles
  • 07m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Did my run improve or my swim and bike just get worse? Suffered through this pretty well, closed the gap on the dam hill to some long course guys before they split off, had another long course rabbit to chase down at the finish.
What would you do differently?:

run continues to improve
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in lake for a few minutes. Sat in cold kiddie pool several hours after I got home and finally started feeling better after that.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Was not prepared for this race, fatigued from travel and poor training in week leading up to race.

Hills are not my strong suit and this race is hilly, every time the road turned up I fell back. In years past I've gotten a lot of lunchtime workouts at Shawnee Mission Park but work has not allowed me to do that this year.

This was a training race and it fulfilled that purpose well but still very frustrating to see so many guys I normally hang with drop me on the bike, especially when they were on lap 4 of the long course to my lap 1 of the sprint.

Event comments:

Well run race and no thunderstorms, for a change.

It looks like, to me, that it was quite the training day!  Hot as hell, too. It was my first time racing there, quite the humbling course.
