Pre-race routine:

Listening to music and take a gel
Event warmup:

ran about 500yds
Swim
  • 29m 41s
  • 800 yards
  • 03m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

While walking to the swim start the first thing that came to my mind was wow this is a long walk! I started in the 4th wave and like usual positioned myself in the back which turned out to be a bad idea. The swim route was simple, run into the water and swim out to the 1st buoy, make a right turn and swim straight while keeping the buoies on your right and then a final right turn and swim to the shore. So I ran into the water and started my stroke and immediately started running into people who looked like they started out in a breaststroke! I couldn’t get any clearance and had to keep on stopping If I could do it over I would have started on one of the front edges because I would have been able to at least get into a grove for the 1st 150-200 yards before I started to slow and rest which I think would have saved me some time. Over the course of the 30 min swim, the people in the 2 waves passed me and I stopped 4 times, 2 times holding a buoy, 1 time a life guard floaty and another time a kayak. I think would do 15-20secs on my back then freestyle for 25 strokes and repeat. This was by far my worse swim effort not only because of time but because I spent so much time on my back my quads were hurting which I feel had an effect on my bike which I will discuss later.
What would you do differently?:

This was my longest swim so far and my longest open water swim and I realized that I have to rededicate my self to swimming for these final weeks leading up to the NYC Tri since the distance is double and I REFUSE to be in the Hudson river for 1 hour!!!
Transition 1
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

Went with no socks for the bike since I have been practicing that and wore my watch on the swim so I wouldn't have to put it on in transition
What would you do differently?:

Just be overall faster
Bike
  • 39m 12s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 19.13 mile/hr
Comments:

So after reaching transiton my bike was pretty easy to spot since most people had already started the bike section. I decided to do the bike and run with no socks and I have been practicing brick workouts without socks for the past couple of weeks so it went well. On this course I feel I could have avg 21mph but do to my quads hurting and me feeling like I needed to save some for the run i didnt go all out on the bike but still a fairly decent time
What would you do differently?:

Swim more efficiently so that I can go harder on the bike
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Didnt add my new laces to these shoes so had to tie my shoes but did go with no socks
Run
  • 21m 5s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt very good on the run but didn't feel like I was moving as fast as I was. The run is definitely my strong part and I took advantage of this as this is where I mad up the most ground.Seeing people walk gave me motivation to keep going and run harder
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Drank 2 bottles of water, a bagel, and 3 sugar cookies!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My sucky ass swim! But I have a new dedication and will be hitting the pool 4-5 times a week until the NYC Tri

Event comments:

I will definitely do this race next year as a bench mark and it was well organized. Most importantly the T-shirt was a Tech TEE!! lol

Good job on not giving up after a bad swim. It sure takes a lot out of you mentally when it doesn't go well. At least it did for my first sprint.

Great job, despite the "sucky azz swim."  Sweet time on your 5K!  Congrats on hanging in there and pushing through to the end.

Great job on the race, despite the rough start.  You hammered it on the run man!!  solid work!  Too bad we didn't connect this time around.  I'll make sure to look out for your whitesox cap and headphones in transition for NYC!

Andre, I love hearing your good attitude and determination.  The swim is by far the most challenging due to so many variables: technique, water temp, chop, crowds of people, current, sighting.  It's no wonder so many people struggle with that part of the race.   I would kill for your bike and run times!!!

Great job, Andre! Awesome run. We've all had bad OWS experiences, and you've got the right attitude - onward! The next one will be better.

Absolutely agree with this!! A couple more weeks in the pool and has much open water as you can come up with.... You will be ready for NYC TRI.....

All in all a good race!

Andre, you're awesome!!!!

Love your attitude. Great race. The swim is the hardest piece of the puzzle unless you grew up in a pool or a lake. Way to keep your head in the game for the bike and run. It must be a blast to run that fast and pick off so many people at the end! See, if you're a good swimmer, then people pick you off the entire bike ride. Sometimes that can be mentally deflating! So it all evens out in the end, right?!

Now, like others said, get thee to the pool and into the OWS and rock that NYC tri!!

Sorry about the swim, good thing is you now have experience and know what to train for. Also a good thing about NYC is the current. Depending on your wave all you need to do is float! Great run and bike. Your run is very impressive I'm doing NYC as well. Good luck.

Fantastic job on the rest of the race, especially considering how much extra effort you had to spend on the swim.  Just keep practicing and you will improve.   And I'll trade you my swimming for your running any day.
