Sunny
Total Time = 1h 16m 48s
Overall Rank = 68/270
Age Group = Under 39 Clydes
Age Group Rank = 2/12
Pre-race routine:

Drove down on Friday and stayed at the sponsor hotel, the Veranda Inn. Went across the street for packet pick-up and the athlete's pasta dinner. Normal race day breakfast, whole wheat bagel with Nutella and chunky peanut butter, milk, multi-vitamin, 2 Aleve, and 2 Endurolytes. Then rode bike to the race site, just under 3 miles.
Event warmup:

Bike ride to race site plus some easy stretches.
Swim
  • 07m 55s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

Typical swim for me, never got into a good rhythm with my face down, so swam the entire way with my head up. Was grabbed on my shoulder several times by the same guy. Eventually put a hand on his side and pushed back to let him know to give some room. First time that has happened.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more than once every 2 weeks!
Transition 1
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Fastest T1 in division. Had the best location, first bike, first rack by the bike exit/entrance. Remembered to open the back of the helmet strap during set up, so my helmet went on easy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, T1 went very well
Bike
  • 37m 51s
  • 13 miles
  • 20.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't get off to a fast start, was only in the 18-19 mph range. Got passed by more people than I liked. Knew I was 40+ seconds behind the guy I was chasing. Was only 20 seconds behind at the turn around. Caught up and passed him at the 9 mile mark, same as the last race. Was much faster on the return, 21-22 mph.
What would you do differently?:

Move the torpedo rack forward on my aerobars, one of the zip-ties slid off at the start and the rattled the entire way.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

2nd fastest T2, although I think the guy who beat me didn't change shoes. 1st time I was able to rack my bike on the handle bars on the return because of switching to the torpedo mount bottle rack instead of the aerobottle.
What would you do differently?:

Took feet out of shoes too early again. Saw orange cones in the road, thought it was the turn to transition, took my feet out, then realized it was some workers that put cones around the back of a truck they were working on. Oh well, I think it helped cool me off!
Run
  • 28m 46s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt SLOW. Kept a steady pace, but not close to my best pace. Got passed by quite a few people but none were in my division.

Saw a manatee as I was crossing the bridge after the first turn around.
What would you do differently?:

Build my run base, too much time off and not enough structure to my runs.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, shower, and shade!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

Major restroom issues - No toilet paper in men's or women's restrooms, no porti-potties anywhere. Nearest restroom to transition was several 100 yards off the course.

Could have used at least 1 more water station, 2 would be great due to the lack of shade on the run course.
