Subject: 1st time relay

I had been doing Tris for about 10 years until i took off the past 3 years.    I am still running.   I am doing a tri relay in a few weeks (bike).   Is there any rules that i need to follow during T1 and T2?  I never paid attention to the RD when he/she was giving instructions to the relay people.

Do i have to stand by my bike, when the swimmer gives me the chip, etc.?  Are the rules standard or do they vary from race to race.

Also does anyone have any tips?   I hope i still remember how to ride my tri bike.

thank you in advance

It's going to vary from race to race so check with th RD. I've done them where the exchange is at the rack, and I've done them where all relay members wait in a common area for their teammate.

It will definitely depend so check with the RD.

My biggest tip is for the teammates to give a really accurate guesstimate on timing and have the next person ready many minutes early.  It takes a lot of pressure off and it can be pretty stressful waiting for your teammate since you are not usually in view of the swim finish or bike in.

Have fun!

I did a relay a few weeks ago.  This is what worked really well in our transition:  I swam, my runner removed the chip from me and placed it on the bikers ankle.  When the biker came in I removed the chip and put it on the runner.  You are participating, you are allowed to be in transition after the race start (first wave) goes off.

As far as I know that is completely allowable in relays.  You could ask the RD to be sure, but it saves a tired athlete or a "raring to go" one from fumbling with a timing strap.

Great advice...always have person going out on bike or run to make the change of timing chip. When I do relays with my kids I have them practice a couple times until they get it.

Relays are a blast..enjoy!
