Pre-race routine:

II had a wedding the night before, saw partied it up, came back home to pack, and slept at midnight to wake up at 3 to drive to Oxnard.
Event warmup:

Got into the water and swam around a little bit. Water felt really cold.
Swim
  • 30m 44s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

My swim was horrible. I literally could not find my rhythm. I got kicked in the face a few times, and it got me a bit flustered. My stroke was really off. All the more reason to swim A LOT more.
What would you do differently?:

RELAX, and just swim
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

It was a LONG sand run into T1. My legs were tired by the end of the sand run.
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn how to mount onto the bike with shoes clipped in. I could do it with my trivents, but have a lot of trouble with the sworks shoes
Bike
  • 1h 06m 3s
  • 23.2 miles
  • 21.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I sold my cervelo a few weeks ago and so I had to use my road bike. It made a huge difference. I love my road bike, but for racing, not the best in getting into a good position. I know for sure I could have gone a lot faster with a tt bike. And I'm pretty sure the bike course is shorter than stated because I think I ended up going only 20 mph for the entire bike portion.
What would you do differently?:

More climbing, more intervals and more time in the saddle. And use a tt bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

I left my nutrition in my shoes and I completely forgot about them when I put my shoes on. FAIL. So I had to take my shoes off and take everything out again and put them on. It probably took 15-20 secs off
What would you do differently?:

to not lose focus.
Run
  • 48m 3s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt pretty good the first 3 miles. Took in Gel before and I was probably going low 7s. And then I just got really tired. My quads started to tighten up a little bit but I just kept chucking along. My run fitness was definitely not up to par with the lack of training.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta keep running, put more miles in.
Post race
Warm down:

Saw the gf, and one of my buddies raced and came in 6th in his ag. Got some strawberries, packed up, and made my way home to escape the traffic

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of run fitness and weight

Event comments:

This race was a tester for me. Last 2 weeks have been crazy. Couldn't get in a good chunk of training. I was even considering scratching the race because the drive was far away, and I didn't want to wake up early. I knew this wasn't going to be my best race, but considering how busy things have been and the lack of training, I'll take it. So I am definitely not in race shape, but it's just all the more a good reminder to be really consistent in the training from here onto IMAZ.
