Subject: Advice on booking guitar lessons

I would like to buy my boyfriend some guitar lessons for his birthday - he has an old acoustic and has a real strong desire to learn, and it's something that he would never splurge on for himself ... but I have no idea what to look for in a teacher for adults.

Any advice? I'd prefer to buy lessons that he can take at home - is scheduling going to be a concern? He's a shift-worker, and absolutely cannot pin down a set time every week. Also - he's turning 47 so I need to find a teacher that has experience with adults.

What else should I be looking for/asking? Anyone else out there learn as an adult, and have any words of wisdom to pass on?

Thanks in advance, CoJ!

Check out www.guitarscanada.com.  There is a lot of discussion about online lessons, Skype lessons, and video lessons.  I think that would be a good start.

It is always good to have good teacher early on to make sure you don't develop any bad habits/form that is really tough to correct.

I hope this helps.

www.jamplay.com  It's excellent value.

I can personally recommend two acoustic guitar instructors on that site: Miche Fambro and Randall Williams.  Miche is one of the most talented and original musicians I've ever heard, never mind played with. Randall is a nationally recognized instructor and clinician. He's also a BTer who occasionally hires me to play bass for him so he can make funny faces at me.

Marma - jamplay looks great! Thank you so much, that is the perfect gift for him. I'll be buying him a subscription shortly. :-)

Don't know about jamplay, but I really like guitartricks.com.  I've let my subscription lapse but I am about to renew it.

i would ask other guitarist in your area to find out about a good instructor local to you.. i was given lessons when i first learned to play. The guy that i would booked with didn't help me much..
I learned more on my own, jamming with others, and asking questions of other ax slaying friends..

teaching styles vary per instructor.. normally when you schedule lessons, they are booked for a set time (im sure they can work with you). one thing you want to figure out is what type of music do he (your boyfriend) want to play.. this is so you get you with someone thats where he wants to be. not saying a blues player cant teach alternative. but style of play is different. as an example.

hope it goes well..

Sounds like you've made up your mind on lessons, but still wanted to put in my thought on the matter. I learned to play guitar on my own through internet tabs/chord sheets. My main goal was to be able to play my favorite songs. I didn't (and still don't) have much desire to learn the nuances of the musical scales, notes and fret board. Some teachers are very much into the music theory and it can frustrate some who "just wanna play a song."

My FIL is a long time music teacher and currently gives lessons and he teaches the theory. For kids I think this is the right way to teach. For someone who's 47yo, I wonder if he'd prefer a teacher willing to take a simpler (and quicker) approach to learning songs on the guitar.

I'm no pro, but can get by.
