Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5, since I couldn't sleep anyway. Showered, coffee and some cereal. Then Elizabeth picked me up and off we went! I had some yogurt in the car, and we checked in just in the nick of time. We set up our transition area, and then headed down to the lake.
Event warmup:

Warmed up by jumping up and down in the lake and swimming a bit.
Swim
  • 11m 13s
  • 366 meters
  • 03m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had a rough time with the swim. So many people, it was hard to get swimming, so I was barely getting a breast stroke. My lungs were so tired from my bad cold that I could not breathe well. I had lots of asthma and I even had to back stroke a bit to catch my breath. I didn't actually start "swimming" until I could almost see the shore.
What would you do differently?:

Not be sick. Maybe wait til more people pass so I can swim alone.
Transition 1
  • 03m 48s
Comments:

Transition went ok, I was mostly trying to catch my breath from the swim. I almost forgot to put on my bike helmet.
What would you do differently?:

Put on bike helmet first.
Bike
  • 40m 28s
  • 11 miles
  • 16.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Again, I was still trying to catch my breath from all the asthma during the swim. I also noticed my back tire was low, and I was afraid it was leaking, but it wasn't. After about the half way mark, I knew the tire would be fine and I got more into a groove. I still was feeling sick, so I tried to just maintain a steady pace and a high RPM.
What would you do differently?:

Pump tires ahead of time!
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

This went smoothly, put on my running shoes quickly, and dumped my helmet. Chugged some more tonic water to help prevent cramps on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a bandana for my hair.
Run
  • 39m 38s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 12m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt really good in the first part of the run. I had taken it easy on the bike, so I felt like I had good energy, considering. Again, I took it easy since I wasn't feeling too well. I walked up the hills, and ran the rest. The hills were steep but short, and I ran more of the course than I expected. I thought the run course was only 2 or 2.5 miles, so I felt great at the beginning, but by the end I felt bad that it was taking me so long. Only after the fact did I realize it was actually a full 3.1 miles. Then I didn't feel so bad about my time. My knees and ankles were getting a bit sore by the end.
What would you do differently?:

Know the distances :)
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and stretched. Had some fruit and muffins.

Yay for 1st post postpartum race! Yeah, swimming always sucks with so many people. It's the one sport that is worse on race day. Running and biking are always more fun with more people around, but not swimming! I'm so impressed you raced even with a cold + asthma. Sucks when you're struggling to breath, but what determination!
