Subject: The scale is a big fat liar.
I hate my scale.  I really do.  It is evil to the core, and wants nothing more than to discourage me and poke fun at my efforts.  Well, screw you, scale!!!  You may not budge, but FOUR people in the last 2 days have told me that I look like I've lost a lot of weight .  So there.  Now I'm going take you out back and beat you up unless you start cooperating, because you will not defeat me!!!

Just visited some family I haven't seen in a year. Got a lot of "You look great. How much more weight have you lost?" The answer is none. I've been battling the scale for a full year now. We are sworn enemies.

I only weigh myself at the end of the week since weight does fluctuate so much.  You can wake up and be 2 lbs lighter and then weigh yourself in the middle of the day and gain 3lbs (based on fluid and food intake). 

Glad that other people are noticing your improvements in health.  I always work out/train to become healthy and enjoyment and if my weight goes down that is always a plus but not always a necessity.

Keep up the good work the lbs will come off soon enough!

Start taking body measurements.  I was amazed at how many inches I would lose and not have the scale budge.  I would get discouraged by the number on the scale until I would take my measurements and see I was still losing.  It's also kind of interesting to track the  crazy way in which our body decides to lose the pounds.

It certainly makes me feel good to know that I'm not the only one who hates their scales. I hit a plateau for months where I didn't lose anything. I was able to keep increasing my endurance, distances, and speeds though and I knew that I was slimming down. I finally decided to stop looking at the scale and just worry about doing the distances.

 

Recently, I changed some stuff up on my training plan/style and the weight started falling again. I can feel it...but I still try and avoid that nasty, evil, scale. All that does is frustrate and depress me.

I understand! I had 2 scales both digital, but one showed just whole number and the other weight to 1/10 lb. The second one drove me bonkers with the fluctuations that I got rid of it. The first one I still use, but only in the a.m.

My girlfriend weighs herself every morning. She records her weight. She gets upset when her weight increases 2 lbs overnight. She feels better now that she looks at the weekly average change instead of day to day changes. I also showed her how changing the placement of the scale can yield a change in weight. I also showed her how standing on different areas of the scale can yield different readings.

Scales are not the perfect tool people expect them to be. They are good for monitoring a general change, but, let's just say, "NOT CALIBRATED FOR TRADE"

Muscle ways 4 times as much as fat so even if you're burning fat, you could be developing muscle that cancels out the weight loss. Body Fat % is a better number to go by.

I had a big, fancy scale with the big, supposedly accurate dial and a fancy, comfy foot pad that controlled my life because every morning when I would get on it it would tell me how to feel about myself.  "Oh oh, your up half a pound, I don't care if you have a great work out planned and you feel happy, you have to have a bad day."

 

I finally FINALLY got tired of a THING ruining my day, so I dropped it out a two story window.  Very empowering.

I love this thread. I want to join "The Scale Can Kiss My A.." club. Last summer when I got off the couch I weighed close to 250. For my 63rd birthday I gave up sugar for the year and started training in earnest. I lost about 20 lbs lickety split. Now for the last 6 months although I haven't changed a damn thing (except training longer and harder as I get in better shape) I have lost maybe a pound or two more , that's it. How does that work? I think by reading this thread I've figured it out. ---- THERE IS A SCALE CONSPIRACY.  By some criteria unknown to me the scales have selected a small group of us to torture. I don't know how or why but what I do know from this thread is that we are fighting back. That's right we have been empowered to throw our scales out the window, smash them with bats and give them the finger. We are coming back and we are going to win this covert war against the Scale Conspiracy. And when its all over they will make a movie about us. Who do you want to play you?

WHAT!!  NO, a pound is a pound.  This drives me nuts when individuals give false information like this.  Now, before this goes past what it should, I will go ahead an say I grew up in the health industry and was sponsored and hold many certifications, so I know what I am talking about.

What you MAY be thinking of is the fact that of the density of the two.  Fat takes up more space while muscle takes up much less.  In fact, the more muscle a person has, the more calories they will burn while at rest, just sitting.  If someone gains 3 pounds in a week and someone says, "it's just muscle," I know for a fact it isn't.  It's very hard for someone to gain that much in a week, but it could be due to many factors, which include stress of starting the new diet, workout, all while working, taking care of kids, etc. 

On the topic of the scale.  Scales are worthless because BMI, bloodwork, measurements, and how you ultimately feel is the only thing that should ever matter.  Let's not forget we all are different people with different genetics and body types, very unique people!

Therefore, for the thread starter, while you hate the scale, just know you have a group of us behind you who love and support you because you love and enjoy what we love; health, life, and living a healthier lifestyle.  Don't let digits on a plastic piece of mass poison your outlook on life.

I'm working with a nutritionist and my scale hasn't moved in 5 weeks!!  Very frustrating because I'm not eating 1/2 the junk that I was before and have a very clean diet.  This week we've stripped more carbs and increased protein...again!  My clothes have been loose for a while, so it's hard to tell if I'm losing any weight or toning up.  I don't care if the scale ever moves as long as the double butt cheeks go away completely at some point, and maybe I get to see a glimer of the abs that I know are hiding under belly fat.  :-

I've also been training for my first Olympic distance in 2 weeks.  My endurance and speed have both increased dramatically over the summer, but no conversion to weight loss.  My nutritionist is saying eat less, my husband (who's into bodybuilding) is telling me to eat more to break through the plateau.  Watching my husband work out a fraction of the time I'm putting in on my tri training and seeing incredible results while I stay stagnant is also not very motivating. 

After I throw my scale out the window, something's gotta give!
