Age Group Rank = 5/12
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5.45am. Set up bike. Ate Powerbar + banana. Drank chocolate milk. Cycled from hotel to event. Set up. Went for a walk around race site drinking Heed.
Event warmup:

Got wetsuit on and spent about 10 minutes in the lake before lining up.
Swim
  • 32m 39s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

Waited for everyone else to go in to avoid the washing machine. Managed to get comfortable much faster than previous swims. Was bilateral breathing on way back, and catching the occasional draft. Had some problems sighting on the way out due to distance and had to stop a couple of times.
Still slow compared to top guys but aim was to relax, and I think I achieved this.
What would you do differently?:

Possibly longer warm up as seemed to get stronger the longer I was going.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Easy run from beach into transition. Took wetsuit off before getting on helmet and sunglasses. Grabbed bike and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Bike
  • 1h 20m 1s
  • 40 kms
  • 29.99 km/hr
Comments:

Started up big hill. Managed to settle in pretty well and seemed to reach Sprint turnaround pretty quickly. A little while after that saddle didn't feel right. Turns out it was loose and tilting backwards. Final 1-2 km all downhill and took it easy to try and improve run transition.
Lower back sore from tilted saddle position.
T1 and T2 times included on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Check bike bolts the night before!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Changed shoes to Asics the night before as found pressure point wih normal race shoes. Slipped on easy but took a little longer to secure laces.
What would you do differently?:

Practise with Asics shoes
Run
  • 46m 25s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 38s  min/km
Comments:

Found first 2-3 km hard. Wasn't sure whether it was the effort on the bike, or the heat. After about 5km started to ease into it and felt great for the last 2km.
What would you do differently?:

Practise more transition running. Check out course before running it.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around transition area for about 10-15 minutes. Drank about 1/2 litre Heed. Went for cool down and wash in lake. Played with Emily in park.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim, as usual. Not sure if saddle actually slowed me down but definitely didn't help. Lack of sleep and stress at work the week before.

Event comments:

Enjoyed my day, especially as a couple of days previously I didn't think I'd have a good day at all.
