Sorry if this should be in COJ, but I was picking up the guitar last nght to start learnig for about the millionth time in my life and I wondered about all the swimming I'm going to be doing to train for various tri's.

Is there anyway to get around softening of the fingertips from swimming or should I bag one goal for another?  I know that sounds severe but I'm just putting it out there.

Riding your bike LOTS without gloves and working on it yourself should harden your hands up nicely no matter how much you swim.

Actually, I'm not sure what you mean by softening of the fingertips from swimming?

I used to play alot but then started swimming, biking, and running lots...

You'll still build calluses.  Swimming won't change that one bit.  So rock on, my man.   Rock on.

I have over 30,000 posts on triathlon forums over the last decade. This is the first time I have ever seen a question that was not asked before.

Remarkable. Thank you.

By the way, I have no idea... Undecided

I've been playing guitar for 17 years and doing triathlon for less than one. If you play regularly then your callouses will not go away no matter how much you swim. They might peel off more often though with all that chlorine. But when they peel off they grow back thicker.

I play banjo. We use stainless steel strings. Don't sweat it, the fingertips do just fine even swimming 3-4 days a week.

I play guitar and stand-up bass. Swimming has no effect on the callouses. So, stop making excuses and...

Way back when I went to college on a music scholarship. I don't play a lot now a days, some tunes for my daughter is about all, but my fingers hold up just fine. Now - I've got 20 some years of guitar/bass playing so my finger pads are like rocks anyway, but your body adapts to how you use it. No need for any trade offs, play away!

I'm a bass player and swimmer.  Your callouses will not be overly softened by swimming.

Been playing for 20+ years, tri-ing or just over 1. Your callouses will not go away by swimming.

Another semi-pro bassist here. If your callouses are getting soft from swimming, you're not playing enough.  Wink
