I have a "everything but the kitchen sink" gear list - it has everything I could possibly think of for any race. Then, when I pack, I either check it as "packed" or "not needed". Using the list, I haven't forgotten anything - but, have shown up without something that I failed to consider as needed. Most recently, I showed up at a race in Mexico with my new wheel builder cover installed. Well, the wind was howling that day and I didn't have the tools on me to remove it. Luckily the on-site bike mechanics were able to help me - but, I rather be self-prepared for these situations. I have since added cassette removal tools to my list.

I haven't forgotten anything yet. but the person next to me last weekend forgot her socks.

+1 on the check list. I triple check to make sure I have everything.

Good Luck!!

You don't need socks for triathlon.

You go sockless for an Ironman?? Ouch! I like the skin on my feet to stay in one piece!

@axterra

"Just this past weekend, my wife and I were going to a race that was a 4 hour drive away.  About an hour into the drive and just as we were crossing a bridge with a $43 toll, my wife says to me "You remembered your wetsuit right?".  I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....   I didnt' have the wetsuit or my goggles and this was gonna be a cold ocean swim.  I could have done it but she wanted to turn around so we got someone to pickup the wetsuit and goggles at our place and meet us half way there.  She even managed to convince the toll bridge operator to let us cross again for free!  Have I mentioned my wife is awesome?  "

Tell me about it, we are prisoners on our own island!  I could always take the $60 ferry instead.....

I am a checklist guy!!! I have a master checklist in an Excel spreadsheet that I can modify for each race. What can I say - its the anal MBA Control Freak in me.

At a sprint tri early this season, I realized - as I was walking to the water - that I had forgotten to adjust and tighten down the bolts on my seat post. I have to lower my seat to get the bike in the back of my SUV, and I forgot to raise it up. Luckily, I had an allen wrench in my transition bag and was able to (somewhat) quickly make the adjustment in T1. Spent the whole swim thinking about it though. I was really worried I would forget and get out of transition with the seat not secured.

Socks. I've had to borrow Chris' socks (he's a full grown man and his feet are larger than mine are!) on 2 separate occasions just this season. Last season I forgot socks and my WETSUIT for a Lake Michigan swim.

Luckily Chris was down at the expo ahead of me and I phoned ahead and he picked me up a pair of socks. But I couldn't fix the wetsuit issue. Just swam without it. Now I make a list. 8 years into the sport and I've just started embracing a packing list.

For IM races, these are the things I tend to forget (or almost forget)

Water bottles you don't mind tossing for the race

Salt tabs

Reflective tape (always bring some, even if you think you won't need it)

Gel flask

Doubles of anything you want to have in both transition bags

adding - a pair of arm warmers b/c you just never know!

Ahhh thanks for the replies. I've used various checklists. Everyone gets that "damn, what am I forgetting" though when they're about to leave, then realize it an hour into the trip.

Did IMLP in 09, but I lived back home, 45min away, so it was no issue asking my sister to bring it when she came. Well, now I live 2 1/2 hours away, by no family and nobody coming to LP later, so yea.

Like others, mine is SOCKS! But not becuase I didn't remember them.

Once, my dog (who looooves socks) snatched them from my packing pile! Found them in his dog bed after the race.

The other time they made it into my bag, but the day before the race I did a quick spin on the bike - left the socks (I only packed 1 pair?!) with the rest of my clothes instead of putting them with my race gear.

Sunscreen.

I either forgot to bring it, or I bring it and forget to use it.

"Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. .."

Bug repellent.  Mosquitoes are hungry for triathletes standing around before a race.

Rogillio - 2011-07-20 9:35 AM My front wheel!

Wasn't a race (and it wasn't me...mercifully)...but a guy I know showed up for a group ride the other day (after a 45 minute drive to get there) without his front wheel...

I've actually never forgotten anything...and I even played with fire this weekend and packed without looking at my gear list.

My dog steals my socks too! She knows that I put them in the bag, and will root around in there until she finds them. She waits until I turn my back to get them, then takes them into the backyard to 'play' with them. What a sneak!

BTW...always ask when you forget something...both my wife and I always carry extra stuff that people forget or lose:  goggles, race belts, bar end plugs, even a cheap pair of sunglasses.  I've heard the PA announcer in transition announce that someone was looking for a helmet at a couple of races and in both cases they apparently scored a loaner.

Garmin, pump, and race belt.  Flashlight is a really good tip: I'll add that to my list.  Thanks.

Another one that's easy to forget. I think I've got five or six chip straps now just from oops.

Decided to put my gatorade/water bottles in the freezer half hour before I left to chill. Got to the triathlon and realized I'd left them in the freezer. And on the way to the transition area to drop my bike off I dropped my banana, and a car ran over it squirting the banana out of both ends. My wife & daughter thought it was funny...

Not something I've forgotten it, but I always have a roll of toilet paper in my transition bag.  I probably could have traded it for a set of Zipps at Wildflower.
