Subject: Aero helmet or disc cover?
Background, just purchased a new Trek SC 7, and a set of SRAM S60. Resources have pretty much been exhausted for this season so which would be a more beneficial final purchase for this season an aero helmet or disc cover? Chinese in BT before my wife finds out ......... Adam

Someone will come along with a link to an article but...

Your body creates much more drag than a wheel or a bike ever will. It is much more advantageous to reduce body drag than bike drag.  IE - Get the helmet.

I would say aero helmet as well. I've seen a lot of sales recently for under $80 for a giro advantage 2.

helmet for reasons above. also because you can use the same helmet for a long time regardless of changes you make to your current wheel set. if you choose later down the road to get a different wheel set you may need a different cover for it

Helmet since you already have a s60.  If you said helmet or cover for your standard training wheel, it may be a toss up.

While you will get a benefit for the wheelcover on a s60, the net gain would not be as great as a wheelcover for a 30mm wheel.

While the Helmet will be a positive gain, either way.

One more vote for the aero helmet. As others have said, there are some great deals on helmets now.

Slightly off-topic question regarding these aero helmets (i hope I don't screw up your thread, but it seems like you've got your answer)...

Do they significantly cut down on the sound of the wind rushing past your ears when riding?  This might be my least favorite part of biking, especially in the spring when I know it's going to be cold and windy - it ain't fun getting out there in that in the first place, but then you add in like 100 decibels and it's enough to make me want to give it up.

Had the same dilemma myself, except with my Trek Equinox 7, SC is too rich for my blood. I have sram s60s as well, and was back and forth on whether to get a disc cover or aero helmet. After doing some research I went with the aero helmet and its been a great choice, I got an LG one from trisports.com using my BT discount.

Depends on the helmet and fit, but they can.  I have the Specialized TT2 and it does cut down the wind noise for me.

And to the OP, another response of helmet doing more than the cover.

Adam--I just noticed you are doing Ironman Louisville.  I have elected to go with the disc wheel covers and NOT an aero helmet for that race.  It is gonna be hot out there.  that's just my opinion. Do you plan on wearing the aero helmet in Louisville?

Oh god no I'm just looking for long term investment for oly and half IM races. I rode the course in may before all this heat, it was upper 70's and that wAs hot enough over that distance and work load.
