heading to St. John USVI next week for a 4-day respite with the wife and another couple.  Have the NYC Tri the following weekend and would like to get in some OWS (i realize race conditions will be at the opposite extreme in the mighty Hudson!!).

Anyone know which beach on St. John offers the best OWS as far as length, clarity, etc.

BTW, I am staying at Caneel Bay but will have a jeep.  Thanks!

Francis Bay should provide you with an awesome swim opportunity.  Calm water and a long uninterupted clear water.  I was wishing that I had brought some goggles with me when I was there.

thanks very much!  i will check it out...i was checking the cruise ship schedule and it appears we may have trunk bay to ourselves (i.e. no cruise ship masses), and i recall it being a very wide bay as well.  Appreciate the heads up!

Awesome place.  I think you could get some really good swims in at Caneel Bay.  Check the map, but I think you could swim from beach to beach, around the jetties, and be relatively safe.

Trunk Bay is awesome, but compared to other St. John beaches, pretty crowded.  There's a good snorkel trail about the small island in the bay.

St. John is fantastic!

For a swim, go to Trunk Bay. There is an 'underwater' trail for snorkelers (signs on the bottom which describe fish, etc  - very cool). It goes out around a small island. Total round trip, according to Google Earth, is about 675 yards. So a few times around, and some additional fun w/ the 'trail' signs makes for a world class OWS, I think

Can't even begin to explain how jealous I am! We went to St.Thomas and St.John for Thanksgiving several years ago. Simply amazing water. Say "Hi!" to the pretty fishes for me. <sigh>
