First of all I'd like to say that the new BT feature of linking your race reports to FB is cool and I appreciate the work put into it.

But it did remind me of people who post their workouts on on their FB status. Such as "xxxx xxxx ran 3.0 miles in 27 minutes and felt good" or "35 mile hammer fest today on the bike. I'm going to pay for it tomorrow".

I think it's good for people who are getting started or back into physical activity, but when it's someone's who's been active for years, IMO it's showing off.

What does BT think?

Never really put much thought into it.  I use Training Peaks so I'll post races and maybe breakthrough or PB workouts.  Majority of my friends are mountain bike racers or triathletes.  I'll check out their workouts if I stumble across it.

I rarely post anything tri related. I think folks who are not in the "lifestyle" look at anything tri related as bragging. Even if you wrote that you just DFL'd I think most non tri folks would think it was a brag. You just did a tri after all which is more than 99% of the country could even contemplate.

Plenty of other forums to get feedback/encouragement from where people would better understand the intent of the post.

When i first started training a year ago I was posting every workout to FB mostly as an accountability thing for me to keep going.  Everybody's watching so I better work out today...

But after a month or so I realized that it was pretty annoying to people and like you said just showing off.  So now the only time I post anything on FB is a race result or some freaky good workout because I really am bragging at that point.

I put up my monthly volume and usually announce when I finish a race.  I stopped including the results but I'll give it up if anyone asks.

If I post about a workout, it's pretty vague and I usually leave out the time/distance. i.e. "Nice day for a bike ride until I swallowed Mothra."  Unless I did it with someone else, then I'll call them out for being awesome. i.e. "joker70 ran circles around me, which is why I ate his oatmeal creme pie."

That being said, I will 'like' updates from people who are starting out and posting their workouts. Positive reinforcement, right?

For me it's a meaningful hobby but I don't want to bore everyone else with every detail.  Think about that friend who posts everything they cooked for dinner or what latest adorable thing their dog did.  It's nice in moderation but they don't need confirmation that my life revolves around it Embarassed

This comic pretty much sums it up for me: http://comicalconcept.com/illustrations/the-facebook-you

Too many people put way too much personal stuff out on the 'net without thinking about it. Yeah, there's a point where it wanders into paranoia but do you really want to announce your 6 hour bike rides so someone can see the patterns for when you're not going to be home?

I've also taken to turning off all the friend's wall postings who post things like, "Gee, should I wear the green top or yellow top today?", "I just finished brushing my teeth."

I've posted one race outcome just because it was a full 140.6 race. I'll probably post IMFL results unless I really blow up down there.

I guess I don't get most of facebook/myspace/mylife. The world doesn't need to know every time I pass gas.

I've had my workouts automatically sent to FB (through Twitter) for years. I originally did it because I had a friend training for his first race and we were going to do it together. He wanted to see the workouts for motivation.

After we finished the race I just never turned off the feature. I get comments here and there on my workouts. I'm friends with a lot of BTers on FB so sometimes they'll comment there instead of inspire here.

Fast forward to earlier this year when the feature stopped working for some reason. I had tons of people ask me if something was wrong because they weren't seeing my daily workouts. I explained about the feature not working and I just hadn't taken the time to find out why. So, I posted whether anyone wanted to continue seeing my workouts because I didn't want to be an a@@hole about bragging about how great I am because I run everyday. The overwhelming response was that my friends wanted to see them. A lot of the said that seeing my workout was the motivation they needed to get out and do something themselves.

Just my 2 cents. YMMV

I don't usually post about them, but will post a general comment occasionally. For example, this spring brought so much rain to the northeast that when we finally had a nice day, I posted something about having a great bike ride in the fantastic weather. I typically omit details like pace and distance, because non-tri friends may take it as bragging.

I only do the FB thing when I make a breakthrough in distance or pace or something. But then I'm one of those people who is just getting started.

Dont post every workout but when I enter or finish a race may make a very general post, or if something happens out of the ordinary during training etc but not I just swam 4000 m followed by a 15k run

I log my workouts on BT, and have it set up so that a summary is posted on Facebook automatically through Twitter. I've never had a friend complain about this, never thought it to be bragginng (certainly not the training I've been able to do lately), but have had several friends take inspiration from it, three of whom have started running because of it, and I have a cousin who has dropped 60 pounds and is training for her first half marathon, in part because of that source of inspiration.

The security issue I don't understand. Workouts are posted after the fact, I wouldn't post "I'm leaving now for a six-hour ride." Also with a wife, three teenage boys and three dogs the house is never vacant.

Posting every tri-related workout is as annoying to me as the guy from high school who post every p90x workout or the other friend who post every meal that is cooked for dinner.  I really don't care.

Everybody uses that site differently.  For me, almost none of my FB friends that are active with the site would give a damn, and I'm sure many would take it as either totally mundane, or bragging.  So, I definitely don't post any workout info.  Maybe if I complete a race I'll post something about that, but that's the extent of it.  But if I was in some big tri club and many of my tri friends were on the site often, it may be worth while.

You can always just block and defriend people who do that if you don't like it.

Exactly.  Despite having over 3/4 of my friends involved in endurance sports, none of them post their workouts.  If one of them started, they'd quickly be "defriended".  It's their perogative to post whatever they want, but I don't have to read it.

I do post a lot about my workouts - not necessarily every one I do.  If someone doesn't want to hear about it, then maybe we shouldn't be friends.

I post most of my workouts to FB.  I make the description short and include a link to the RunKeeper map that shows the activity.

Dozens of people have told me they enjoy seeing my posts.  A few people have told me I'm an inspiration to them because of what I'm doing.  One friend in Dallas and another in Oregon have told me they started biking again after reading my posts.  There's one local lady who started swimming in April because of reading my posts.  I had one family member (distant family) ask me to add her to my friends list because she wanted to "guilt herself" into working out again.

And lastly, one of my real life FB friends has signed up for his first tri and did so because, "After reading your posts for 8 months I've just got to try this thing out."

So I'm firmly in the camp of posting workouts.  Add little tales when needed.  Be brief and just barely brag.  Mention when a workout felt really good and gloss over when workouts suck.  And, IMHO, don't dwell on minutia like heartrate, zones, etc.

The OP says, "When it's someone's who's been active for years, IMO it's showing off."  I don't feel that way.  FB posts are little snippets of what you do.  Working out and training daily and competing in triathlons is part of who you are and FB is about sharing who you are and what you do.

Lastly - remember moderation.  You only need to post 3-4 workouts a week—that comes out to about 150-200 more workouts per year than most people do.
