Subject: Recommended Bike Fitters in Houston

My wife and I both have road bikes that we have not been fit on.

We are planning to put on aero bars and getting fit probably after Bridgeland.

I know that several of the shops have fitters, but I don't know who is good, and who is economical (after all we will be X2 on costs).

Any suggestions, anyone to avoid, anyone who is, or isn't worth what they charge?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know what he charges, but I've had Philip Shama do a few fittings on me and he does a great job.  Uses Retul and will be able to get you taken care of.

Shama Cycles is located on N. Post Oak Rd.

just booked a fitting with Johnny at Tri on the Run for next wednesday.  he came highly recommended by several people, including my coach.  i can let you know how it goes next week if you'd like.

Keri had some good input on this subjet too.  maybe she'll chime in.

X2.  I've heard many good things about Johnny as well.  Getting a bike fit with him is on my "to-do" list, but it keeps getting bumped to the bottom of the list.

+1 on Johnny at Tri On the Run

He fit me about a year ago.  Just make sure to let him know what your goals are.  I was going to be training for IMTX, so I was looking for comfort rather than the most aggressive fit.  Johnnny will take good care of you.

Bike Barn on Wesleyen in West U. has a huge high-tech fitting studio. I  have never been fit to the extremes that these guys are offering, but they seemed to be the most legitimate fitting source you could find. The guy helping me said the total fit session takes about 4 hours, and they take every measurement possible. I think they hook you up on a trainer and then measure and adjust.

Tri on the Run on Memorial also does a sizing process. I think this is if you do not already have a bike, and are looking for one.

X3 on Johnny Z at TOTR.  Takes his time and does it right.

Thanks guys,

I'll reach out to the people you recommended and get some estimates so we can budget for it.

Hopefully our bikes are the right size to start with.

I'll second this. I've personally never had them fit me, but my fiance works for Bike Barn and has been fit by Cynthia there several times. It completely changed his ride and made him that much more efficient. It can be a bit pricey, but it you want a complete fit that's very technical and individualized based on your riding goals, Cynthia is the woman to see. That's her only job at bike barn, and she excels at it.

I got fit last week by Tad Hughes. He's in the Spring Valley location of Houston Cycling Centers.  He's a bit on the pricey side (around $250).  Its all he does and he is definitely one of the best. It's about a 2 hour session and takes into account your flexibilty and goals (distance/speed, etc.). Highly recommended.

Tad used to be one of the fitters at the Bike Barn Custom Fit Studio with Cynthia before he left to work on his own. He's also very good, and a nice guy as well.

Tad Hughes is a name I have heard as well but I couldn't remember his last name.

If Johnny is no longer with TOTR I would not go back there. I have to say he is the only person in that store that ever gave me good service.

I know Cynthia at Bike Barn is very good. They had a ladies night last month and she had a fit clinic and really knows her stuff but a tri fit is $350, quite steep. Not saying she's not worth it just saying it is out of my price range.

For the last couple years, I've been interested in having John Cobb adjust my fit/position. He works out of Tyler, but travels frequently. The last two times I've traveled through NE Texas, I tried to line up a session with him, but things never quite worked out.

http://cobbcycling.com/positioning.cfm

Spendy, but sometimes you get what you pay for! I've had a few fittings from different places around Houston, and, while I'm comfortable on my bike and don't have any major aches/pains/complaints, I don't feel like my position is really "optimal".

I have only had an "eye ball" fit after getting my tri bike.  I am very happy with the results I am getting, but always wonder what a "correct" fit would do.  Maybe one day money will be right or I can justify it.

John Cobb seems to be pretty dang good from what I read from pro triathletes/cyclist though.

just called to confirm my fit appointment with Johnny at Tri on the Run and was told that Johnny is no longer working in the shop as of this week.  They said he's only in the fitness center now.

hum...what to do now...do the fit with the other fitter since i'm already scheduled for it, or use someone else at a different shop.  just my luck....

Does Coach Lyons have a good rep in the woodlands?  I know he advertises FIST fittings on Bike Lanes website.

nevermind he is not on there anymore.

I might get myself in trouble here, but stay away from Lyons. Do NOT let him touch your bike. The LBS is full of warranty issues and broken bikes due to him putting them back together wrong. One guy took out a handful of folks when his aerobars FELL OFF because Lyons didn't put all the screws back.

As for Cobb, just be careful. He'll get you completely optimal from an aero perspective but not taking your body into account. He's hurt some really good athletes I know by making them too aggressive for their bodies.

BINGO!! I used Cynthia and couldn't give her more props. She's FIST, RETUL and Specialized Expert Certified. The first part of the fit was practically a medical exam (found out I have one leg longer than the other). Then tons of measurements and then she puts you on the bike, gets video from 2 angles(of which you get to watch on the big screen in front of you), overlays all kinds of technical stuff, etc. etc. Plus the place looks like a spa when you walk in. They have coffee, wine, etc.  Two thumbs up. Tell her I said hi if you go.

I'll second the recommendation for Tad Hughes.  The fit he does sounds almost the same to what TJ state that Cynthia did.  Left with red marks all over my legs :-) from the measurement and adjustments  Both my wife and I were fitted by Tad and cant be happier and $250 is a good price

From his website

TJ,

I was actually surprised by how "clinical" it was during the first part.  All the measuring, the angles, the stretching, etc.  It's great watching her then apply that to you and your bike.

When I was in the market for a Trek Speed Concept earlier this spring (which I knew would fit me well from a previous meeting of the minds with Cynthia), I called her to ask her professional opinion on which size, bar/stem config, seatpost offset and so on.  The Speed Concept 9 series comes in a bevy of configurations.  I told her I wasn't going to buy it from Bike Barn as my childhood best friend owns a bike shop up in New York and he was only going to charge me his dealer cost.  I did tell her I'd come and have her do the fit once I got the bike.

She told me exactly what I should do and I custom ordered the bike in the size and config she recommended.  I got the bike 45 days later, went to Cynthia for a fitting and that thing fit like a glove. She's good!  I rode that bike to a 5:15 bike split at IMTX three weeks later and was oodles more comfortable than I had ever been on a long ride like that... despite not having much time to ride and acquaint myself with the bike.

I wanted to give a bump to this thread.  Based on the recommendations here, I went to Cynthia at BikeBarn and she was great!

I'd done quite a bit of research into the fitting process and this was still far above what I was expecting.

I couldn't imagine what could possibly take three hours but the entire time was spent on value added activities and she was very patient with my beginner questions.

Another recommendation for Cynthia at BikeBarn.

Since this got bumped I wanted to follow up as well.  I ended up going with Shama Cycles.  They have a very affordable fit option that I thought was well done.

While they offer a more advanced fit they recommend starting with the basics, then moving up after you are comfortable.

I would recommend it, though of course I don't have any other experiences to compare.

Thanks for all the recommendations.

If you don't mind my asking, how much was the Shama fit? I'm thinking about getting my girlfriend one for her birthday, but can't find the prices.
