Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30 and drove over to the bikes and put in drink, pump tires etc. Had a bad night sleeping in the back of the Yukon. Don't do that next year. My lower back was feeling it. Got to the race, setup T2 and used the restroom and put the wetsuit on. Also had a cliff bar granola bar for breakfast and some water.
Event warmup:

Not much. Jumped in the water with my wave. Over 300 in my wave! It was crazy.
Swim
  • 19m 43s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was okay. I was noticing my shoulders were really feeling the pull of the wet suit. Maybe I should try sleeveless sometime? My time did improve this year here. I would hope so. I actually trained this time. I did notice I have a tenancy to pop my head up on every stroke, so I concentrated on keeping my head down and only come up to sight.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work more with the wet suit and get more time in the pool. Keep working on form etc.

Comments:

Felt pretty good on the bike. Spudman can be very frustrating to me. There is a ton of blatant drafting, and usually that doesn't bug me too much, but this year it did. About half way through the bike I get passed by a peloton of no less than 80 people. They take up the whole road and make no attempts to break it up. It's getting dangerous. These are a bunch of people with no handling skills, and half are in their aerobars. They also don't know how told hold a straight line. We passed each other 3 or 4 times before I dropped completely back. Shortly after and ambulance came past to get to a wreck. Well the peloton wouldn't move! The ambulance had to follow them for .5 miles to the wreck because they wouldn't get out of the way, terrible.
What would you do differently?:

Not a ton to do differently. Just keep improving and keep pushing hard!
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Good transition. Put some more body glide on the feet. Almost felt like too much. Saw Mike as I was heading out, he was coming in.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe setup T2 sooner to not have to run with my bike that far.
Run
  • 54m 47s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty darn good run for me. Sub 9 min miles the entire time! I was pretty stoked with that. Got some hot spots on my feet towards then end but pushed through it. The last mile was a struggle but I held on.
What would you do differently?:

It was a great run. Paced perfectly. Just keep getting faster!
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with everyone at the finish line and had a great lunch at The Upper Crust

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I just need to keep being consistent with training and keep it up!

Event comments:

Spudman is always a fun race to do, but this year was awesome. I was first in of our group. Some started behind me, but even Jeff didn't catch me for once (he started 20 mins behind, but beat my chip time by 15 mins). It was a ton of fun, and I BEAT MY BEST OLYMPIC TIME BY 30 MINS!!!! AWESOME! Very happy with how I did today.
