Subject: First Tri = Dissapointment
Well the firt Tri is done, (Sprint 750, 16,5) I finished, but no where close to what I was expecting (Goal) to finish. Lesson learned = More swim training. The swim just killed me and totally set me up for a long day. I got out of the water and was totally spent. The bike ride was tough with some hills and I thougt I was going to throw up when I got to the bike finish. When I got off the bike I walked for about a half mile to recoup, I started running and right away my Hammies started to cramp up and had to stop and walk all stiff legged for a while. They losened up and I tryed to run again and then my Quads cramped, I so much wanted to run, but could not because of my leg cramp so I ended up walking most of the run. (Any ideas on how to prevent that other then training better?) I'm very dissapointed with my results, but that just makes me want to try harder the next time.

For a lot of people, the first triathlon is nothing more than a learning experience. Use the race as a lesson. Like you said, you now know, more swim training. I would even add to that, don't swim so hard. Spending all your effort in the swim to not lose 30 seconds in the water can kill the rest of your day.

Here is the best advice I can give you. USE the training logs here. Starting today, fill out a race report. Log every mile, every lap and every run in the logs. Looking back can be amazing. I decided to run a marathon this year. I sat down and read through every single race report I had ever done and it opened up my eyes to how poorly I was training. If I hadn't done race reports, I would never have done that. It totally changed my training and racing for this year. I'm still not perfect, but I just improved my PR on an olympic tri by over 30 mins yesterday. Logging will help you find problems in your training, and get better advice here on the boards. Keep it up and congrats on your first race!

I found my first sprint hard as well...I was never able to settle into a single sport...by the time I was cruising on my bike it was over...by the time my leg cramps were gone I was done running!

Congrats you finished !

You learned from your first one, build on your weakness firstly. Each part affects the other so focus on your swim while keeping bike/run going. Keep the stress down and have fun building up your fitness and skills.

CONGRATULATIONS on completing your first triathlon.

Your experience sounds very much like my first tri.  The best thing about doing triathlons is that you keep learning.  I found that I needed more base building than I expected.  A couple of months later I found out how important pre race nutrition is to the formula.  It really is a great ride if you keep trying and it sounds like you will.

You just outswam and outbiked your fitness. That is ok. It shows that you have mental toughness and are able to push on when the race gets hard. Now you can use the memory of how you felt in your first triathlon to push you to keep going within a workout or to not skip a scheduled workout.

My first tri I really overcooked the bike and was afraid I was going to vomit as I came in to T2. I had pretty much decided that I was going to quit when I saw someone from work and I couldn't give up in front of someone who knew me. I am glad I stuck with it and fell in love with triathlon.

I second the training log advice. It is really valuable to have a record of how you are training and racing.

You should be very proud of yourself! You finished! Most people don't have the courage to even sign up for one. I just had my 3rd Sprint on Saturday. So far each race has been a learning experience and I expect the other 3 I have planned this summer to be more of the same. When I have completed my season in September I will reflect on the lessons I have learned and will adjust my training and nutrition accordingly. The ladies in the 45-49 class better be ready next summer!

It also sounds like you might benefit from some BRIC workouts.  Do a short run after your rides.

You don't have to do a lot of these, but it will get you use to the feel.

I'll echo the advice about logging here. Include notes for each training session regarding how you felt. This will help a lot when you post questions asking for advice. The lesson from this race is to race at the effort level that your training says you can, not the effort level you think you can. You went too hard for your fitness, and you paid the price. Slow down in your next race, and you'll actually put up a faster time.

In my first triathlon in 1984 I was 2nd from last. It was super tough, and the sport was young. WE didn't know what we were doing.

There was a high point though, several in fact. Late in the run someone pulled up next to me on a bike. I tried to ignore them because I was afraid they may be an official who might pull me from the course since I was out there so long. After the person rode next to me for a minute they said something like, "Just keep going and you'll be OK." I looked over at the person and it was Dave Scott. He had done the race earlier and then went back out on the course to offer the stragglers some encouragement. I was really excited. It was a huge deal. I made it, but it was tough and- as I say- I was 2nd to last.

That was about 250 triathlons ago...  I'm still trying to get this figured out. Yell

The cramping is a weird part of tri's that I wasn't expecting before my first one.  I did do some brick workouts, but apparently not at the intensity of a race, because I never had any issues with cramping in my quads or calves before my first sprint tri.

I think the best way to get around them is simply to train more, which will obviously get your body used to everything, but also fueling/hydrating is huge.  You gotta figure out what your stomach can handle, and then keep yourself fueled as well as possible.

1st off CONGRATULATIONS! I finished my first race yesterday too. Overall, by the clock I was disappointed in what I "figured" I'd do. There were so many unknowns though of participating in an actual RACE that is very different from training. Everyone else has said it and I'm processing the same information myself. What I'd do differently where. The bottom line is all the advice in the world is helpful, but newbies like ourselves have to learn how WE respond to the different things and learn OURSELVES. Especially in a tiring environment. The one thing I knew I had was mental toughness and I so needed it yesterday because the only thing that went as I had hoped was the bike leg. Having said that, I used all my legs on the bike so my run was worthless. Most of all I just soaked up the days' learning experiences and can't wait to apply the learning (and some harder training) to kick the crap out of that time at the next one!! That and finish my race report

Re the cramping, I'd say two things (in addition to more training):

1.  Put in some "brick" workouts where you go directly from biking to running, so your leg muscles get used to the transition.

2.  Make sure you stay hydrated and have plenty of electrolytes.  For a sprint I usually have some Gatorade with breakfast/on the way to the race, and plan to go through a full bottle of half-strength Gatorade on the bike.  If I do that I find I can usually skip the fluid stations on the run and still be fine.

Just hang with it and never give up. You are awesome for finishing and doing something that the great majority of people (even a lot of athletic ones) wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

Your first triathlon sounds like mine.  I entered a sprint with a 1/2 mile swim.  28+ minutes and a lot of hyperventillation later, I somehow emerged from the nightmare....completely spent!  Not to worry.  It does get easier.

Based on the OP, the odds of the cramping being from pacing too hard are near certainty. The chances of it being electrolyte deficiency are near 0%.

Congratulations, and welcome to the club. Many of us are disappointed with our first race. My first swim was a disaster, and I was dismayed, after all the training, to be near the bottom of my AG. You have the right attitude...zeroing in on areas to improve. There is nowhwere to go but up from here!
