Anyone's kids ever done this one?  My daughter just turned 6- she wants to do it but is nervous about the swim.  Can anyone provide feedback about this event??  Thanks!

The Ironkids' race is a one lap around the Capital and ending at the IronMan finish line, unless they changed it this year.  My two older boys did the "race" a couple of years ago (all participants get a medal at the end).

So the race is just a run with no bike or swim?

No, it looks like this year there is a full kids tri event the day prior to Ironman WI.  I do  remember in previous years there was a one lap around the capitol - wonder if this is no longer happening.

I just found online that this is the first year that they'll be doing a kids Triathlon.  All information here -

Wow - I had no idea. I'll have to see if Soren is up for this. He did a tri in June of about the same distance.

Well I got a response to my question directly from a woman named Christine who's title is Athlete Service and Marketing Coordinator for Ironkids.  The swim is at Middleton High School in the pool and there will not be any "swim buddies" as they "expect the athletes swim the swim course without any assistance."  The water WILL be over their heads.  Her rather abrupt response has kind of put me off.  I mean- these are kids- little kids (my daughter is just turning 6) and I was hoping to introduce her to the sport but maybe I need to find a "less serious" venue!  Which is a bummer because she was really excited to do it.....she can swim but who knows on "race day"....nerves, unfamiliar environment....grrr....

Well, that's a bummer. The Monona tri is great for kids, as is the Oshkosh tri. Sadly both are past. The Oshkosh one is a lake "swim" but it's really more of a run through the water. The Monona one is a pool swim, but they have noodles all over the pool should anyone need one.

Well, if you're around the area on Sun. Aug. 14, this is a kids' friendly triathlon - registry ends on Thurs. Aug. 11 just before midnight. -

Hmm.  There's a new schedule of events that has removed the kid's run.

http://c28917.r17.cf1.rackcdn.com/2010/09/Wisconsin_2011-Schedule3.pdf

That would be a real bummer for my family.  My son's been doing that run around the capitol every year since he was 3 2 (this year would have been his 5th 6th time).  I mean, just look here for how cute that is.  :-)

The nice thing about the run is that it was simple and low key, and really young kids could do it.  A quick, low stress, fun event for the whole family.  He was looking forward to doing it again, as was my daughter who just turned 3 a couple days ago.

I'm sure the kid's tri is a lot of fun, but it's definitely a bigger commitment of time, etc, than the little run around the capitol.  And, it's not an option for really young kids.

Kinda bummed about this.  Anyone have firm confirmation that the run around the capitol is no longer?

Thanks!

Scratch that.  My son first did the run around the capitol when we was just 2 years old (2 years and a couple of months).

I like traditions, and I'd be pretty sad if this one was coming to a close. I don't even do Ironman anymore, but we've been making an annual pilgrimage to Madison every September, both to watch Ironman, and for the kids to do the run on Saturday morning.

Aw man. That sucks. We were totally planning to do it. The tri would be fun (and my kiddo does tri's). But, I don't want to haul out to Middelton to do it. We want to be where the action is. Lame-o.

When he was 3, he crossed the line hand in hand with Bucky Badger, with Mike Reilly calling him in.

Good memories!

They sort of had a kid's triathlon last year.  It was on top of Monona Terrace where the check in was for the kid's race around the capital.  Kids dragged a wetsuit for about hundred feet, then did a quick lap on a bike, then ran back.  Whole thing lasted about two minutes, most of which was spent putting on the bike helmet.  I think it was set up for three kids at a time.
