Subject: Drought & Triathlon

I just learned the TriGirl sprint set for this weekend has been changed to a DU because of extremely low water at Lake Houston. They posted pics on their FB page and it is BAD.

This has me concerned about Oil Man. I know Lake Conroe is low and I know it was shallow enough to walk most of the course last November. I am worried. Any body have information about course change? This is my A race this fall but I will not register until I know the lake is going to be OK.

I don't know about a course change, but I do have a house on Conroe and can tell you its BAD. Unfortunately, there have been rumors of the City of Houston taking water out of Conroe and putting it into Lake Houston to maintain city water plans. If that starts happening, it will only get worse for the already low Conroe. I can't imagine they'd cancel the swim considering there are plenty of places on Conroe with deep enough water, maybe they'll just change the route?

Pray for a few tropical storms between now and then?  Seriously I might even take a small hurricane at this point.

I stayed at Latorretta a few weeks ago and the water there is low.  The boat ramp, where the swim exit is, is closed down becasue of the grass growing in the canal.  It was not a dredged canal when the lake opened so it is nauraly 3-5 foot and the lake is almost 4 foot low right now.  The harbor is deep enough, but when the course turns right you go into a island, then another hugh on further down.  We walked last year during the swim portion and it was not even considered a serious drought.  I am going to try to post a few pictures for you to see.  Also, like I said in another thread; our neighbor hood dredged the canal where in the pumps are for the golf course because it was almost to shallow to pull water.  I live a few hundred yards from Lake Conore and I can see the top of La Torretta from my house.

Makes me wonder why there are not more ocean tri's in the area.

Kemah, Sylvan, 5150 and Galveston half are it right?

The city announced today it will draw down Lake Conroe to stablize Lake Houston. First time since 1988.

More liability and harder to put on ocean swims. Way more risk and cancelation possibilities plus a lot of people are afraid of the open water so numbers sometimes suffer.

I did not hear this, but I am waiting to see for sure before I sign up. I did hear that they are looking at other options and change the swim up, greg said that he would know Oct. 1 and would put something out to confirm it.

E-mailed with Greg Pennington last week, I posted it in the Oil Man thread.

He told me they have two options other than the course they used last year. They have had to use a different course in the past. Found the e-mail:

yes, there are a couple of different plans to change the swim course in process.  we will not have the swim course we had last year UNLESS there is significant rain to increase the lake level.

1. we would have the swim like we did the year the dam was damaged (1st year back at the resort) with the swim exit near the old paddlewheeler dock adjacent to the pool complex.

2.  we would have a hybrid out and back course with start and finish on the beach-the water way into and out of the resort marina is plenty deep enough for boats and swimming.

we will make that determination around the 1st of october.

thanks for your patience and your question!

greg

This definitely made me feel better.

Can anyone speak as to Lake Woodlands?  I'm worried about IMTX.  I know it's in May, but weather predicted is that this drought will continue!

Saw someone was having OWS there this weekend.  Can't remember where I saw that, but it can't be that bad off.
