One last reply to this thread from me and then I need to get a little work done

Everyone should be proud for finishing...no matter what your final time.  As I was coming back into the park with 800m left on my run there were people just heading out (some walking) that still had 12+ miles to go but every one of them should be proud for having the determination to get out there in the first place.  Even for the person that took 8, 9, 10 hours...that should be just as important an accomplishment for them as going sub-5 hours was for me.  You were part of probably .001% (if that) that even had the courage to try.

First HIM Lake Geneva Extrem. As previously stated, the run on this cours was a bear and the swim was short. But signed up for IMW this morning and am excited about a year of training.

Overall time 5:46:15
Swim 19:28
Bike 2:55:37
Run2:26:08 (I walked Frank's Killer hill and some of the other hills)

I completed my first half IM, the Diamonmand at Lum's Pond State Park.

Total time 7:09:50, 413 out of 435 overall, 15 out of 17 age group.  Definitely room for improvement.   Swim - 49:17, Bike 3:30:02, Run 2:34:35.  I was happy to have completed it though and pretty much met my goals.

I just finished my first 1/2...

6:12 total time 140/202 22/32 in age group...
31:59 swim
3:01 bike
2:38 swim

Very proud of my first two - but badly judged my run...was hoping for a 2:15 - I'm a very weak runner...but still, a 1/2 is a 1/2!

Congatulations Rhonda.  I think I saw you at Diamondman on the run a few miles before the turn-around -- you asked me how far up it was (I was in a Team Javelin tri-suit and either walking or running slow enough to qualify as a walk).  Didn't know that was you then. Be proud of your accomplishment.  It required tenacity, perserverance and a good race plan. There were some who didn't finish at all.  There are many more who haven't even tried.

How do all the finishers feel today?  I'm pretty sore.  My quads, hamstrings, and ankles are not happy.  Plus, my upper back is pretty sore.  I don't roll very much in the water, so I do a lot of pulling with my arms instead of my core.

How is everyone planning on recovering?  When will start working out again?  I'm not doing activity today and probably tomorrow.  I might go for a short run on Wednesday.

Joel, congrats on your 1st half IM.  Sub 5:00 is quite impressive.

Good job to everyone completing an HIM, my hats off to you.

Great question...
My quads are talking to me, but otherwise I feel pretty darn good. My routine has been so programmed for the last 8 weeks or so, that I kind of feel like a man without a plan :-(. I went and putzed at the gym this morning and decided to do a spinning class. That helped with the soreness and I didn't push myself. Happily, my back/ankles/shoulders/achilles etc. etc. and all my other fragile areas feel good. I'll take tomorrow off and only do light activity until next Monday, and then.... ?????

Great job Rhonda!  Just saw your pic on Niel's e-mail with the Young Marines of DE that made the trek back to the finish with you from the aid stations.

Congrats!

I'm pretty sore today.  Once I start to move, it's OK.  But that first effort everytime makes it feel like I've been sitting still for days!

I'd like to get an easy swim on Tues. or Wed. if I can.  Will probably run or ride easy later in the week.  Next week I start training for the Philly Marathon in November--will be my first if all goes well.

No just kidding about the tag line.  However, I have 8 yrs on you.  I have to admit, I am feeling pretty stiff today, escpecially after sitting.  I got in my hot tub 2x and got a massage, so I am feeling like I expected.  I actually had a hard time sleeping last night. so I got up at 9 pm, after trying to go to bed at 8.  I proceeded to pig out, downing 2 pop tarts, the rest of the hoagie from the race, and 2 glasses of milk.  I felt much better, and I finally went to bed at 10:30.  This morning when I remembered my accomplishment, I did not feel too sore.  I know I'm nuts, because I will probably do this race next year.

Thank you to everyone, both pm BT and at Diamondman yesterday, for your words of encouragement. I was feeling very frustrated and discouraged after yesterday, but then I remembered that even though I am still over 200 lbs. (and almost 52), two years ago I couldn't even walk a mile. Just know that your thumbs up and "don't give up" along the path, both virtual and at the events, have really touched me. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!

I'm more sore than usual, but it's not nearly as bad as I was anticipating.  I've already put in a 20 mile bike ride just after I got up and will do an easy swim, some weight lifting and an ab workout after I get done with class today.  But keep in mind, I'm insane.

Yes, I would say that much is a litlle insane.  However, I am itching to get in some mtb biking.  I think I will take 4 or 5 days off running, but swim tomorrow, and bike Wed.  I really want to start lifting again.

My quads are trashed, calves are a little sore, hammies feel fine.  My traps and upper back are good and sore and my triceps are actually a bit sore for whatever reason.  Oh yeah...I've had a killer headache all day.

No activity today, probably go for a nice walk tomorrow afternoon and get a light swim in Wed.  Thursday will be a ~5 mile run, maybe off on Friday, and then I'm planning a 5k PR on Sat if all goes as planned.  I have no idea what I'm capable of with my current level of fitness but I'd like to go under 18min.

my unsolicited advice, TH3_FRB -

do nothing for the week. you headache is most likely due to dehydration. you'll suck rocks Sat compared to what you're really capable of.

swimming is a good idea.

but then - you're younger than i am and everybody works differenty.

When I first clicked on this thread, I was thinking I am the slowest among us on BT. I realize that I am in the BOP not MOP where I thought I was. I finished my first 1/2 at the Duke Liver. Since I can't get the website up, I don't know my official splits, but I think 6:57 according to my watch. I was hoping for closer to 6. Run killed me and that is usually my strong point (almost an hour more than normal). Learned a lot on what to work on.

Today quads right above knees are sore. Other wise feel good. Have a century, Bridge to Bridge, already scheduled for Sunday so I will do that very easy just to finish. (and to start the hill training I need for next September)

Congrats on everyone who finished and particularly to those who met their personal goals, whatever they might be.

I can't say for sure, but if your run wasn't what you expected then I would look to your bike effort/pacing as the culprit.  I went easy on the bike intentionally.  If you hit T2 thinking you held back too much on the bike then you can always prove it on the run.  If you go too hard on the bike then there isn't anything you can do to recover and the run will hurt start to finish.

Rhonda's achievement was acknowledged by Diamondman organizers in a post-race email:

"We would also like to give special congratulations to our last finisher of the day, 51 year old Rhonda Cohen, of King of Prussia, PA. First State Young Marines of Delaware (one of many volunteer groups) accompanied her from their water stations to the finish line."

Way to go Rhonda!!

People like Rhonda should be an inspiration to everyone.  The fast people may be impressive but for someone to know before they even register that they'll be out on the course for 8+ hours and still do it and never give up...how many people in the world actually have the guts to do that?  way to go Rhonda!  How about a full IM next season?
