I am looking at getting a set of Zipp 808 Carbon Clinchers for my tri bike b/c would like to be able to train on them as well (I'm no pro so don't feel like spending a ton on wheels and only being able to use them on race day).

Does anyone run 808 CC and regret not getting tubular and just using them on race days?

To save some money, RaceDayWheels sells their wheels in November at steep discounts. Also there have been enough threads showing that with the new tires there is little, if any difference between Tubulars and Clinchers. If using for training, clinchers will be much easier (and cheaper) to change out tubes if (when) you flat.

My bike guru buddy told me that I should NOT get tubulars.

He said there's very little difference between clinchers and tubulars in rolling resistance.

AND if you flat on a tubular, you have to re-glue a new one, and you basically can't corner for the rest of the race, because the glue really needs a day to dry.

With all the opinions out there, I will go with personal choice.

For me, being taller/bigger, I switched to tubular several years ago specifically for flat avoidance... my race wheels (20% of my riding) are tubular and my training are clincher...  I can tell you, on a mile for mile basis, the tubular are a radical improvement in flat frequency.  (plus, again, being bigger, I can carry a higher pressure in tubular tires)

Mounting a new tubular (for replacement 3x's and 1 time during a race... Silverman where high speed cornering exceeds most races... the glue is set within minutes, no issues) is almost a non issue if you are prepared.  Tire stretched and pre-glued.  I know for me that it is much faster than a clincher.  (likely under 90 seconds vs. my last clincher flat which was easily over 5 minutes, but there is a learning curve.)

For either one though, get something like Pit Stop to see if it can get you to T2!!!

I tried out both tubular and clinchers before I bought my wheels and both felt really great and could not really tell a difference. I finally settled on a pair clinchers because the cost of replacing a tire on a tubular is so much higher when you flat. On race day, I rarely think about my wheels. I'm more worried about where I am going to pee.
