Subject: Philadelphia Marathon : Official Thread

Hello fellow BT'ers. Who's RUNNING PHILLY!!!??

I'm pretty psyched as I paced a buddy last year at Philly, and this year I get to run it for pure speed.

What's everyone's Training Plan for Philly?

Right now I am taking on the challenging enigma: Training for a 70.3 and a Marathon simultaneously. I'm going to attempt to meld together the Pfitzinger 18/70 plan (from the book: Advanced Marathoning) replacing 'Recovery Runs' with Swimming, dropping a few of the VO2 max workouts, and focusing on the Long Runs, Medium-Long Runs, and Lactate Threshold workouts.  As for the Bike, I'm going to do 1 tempo 25-30 mile ride per week and 1 Long Ride between 40 and 60 miles. So the goal will be two Bike 2X per week; Run 3 to 4X per week; Swim 2X per week. My 70.3 is October 2nd, so the 2nd and 3rd week in September I may likely drop some Run Volume to squeeze in an extra Bike & Swim. After my 70.3 I'm allowing a full week for Recovery and then will focus about 75 to 80% of my efforts on the Pfitz Plan and just try to maintain a low level of Swim and Bike fitness. Man this stuff is complicated. :)

I am doing the Half this year.

I did the full last year, but got diagnosed with Basal cell skin cancer in early october so that mentally gave me an excuse to go weak on the training.

Can't wait to see what I do in the half.  been running consistently at 20+ miles per week this season.

Philly will be my first full mary.  I'm doing a 16 week F.I.R.S.T. training program, which has me only running 3x times a week - Tuesday doing speed work at the track, Thursday tempo runs between 5-10 miles and Saturday long days culiminating in two mile runs in weeks 6 and 4.  Three days each week are spent doing fairly intensive cross training (bike and swim) and one day off for good measure.  I picked this plan due to the fact that I consistently get injured when I ramp up too many miles.  One difference with this plan is that there is less mileage, but the pace of the runs is slightly higher than many other plans. So far, I gotta say that I'm loving the speedwork and the tempo runs.

I did my first HIM this year and have a couple of more sprints and Olys - last one will be Nations Tri on 9/11. I did Philly last year as a half and loved the race.  Great course, great fan support - a whole lotta fun.  I have a goal pace in mind, but am not sure if it is altogether realistic for my first marathon.  Ideally, I'd like to duplicate my half marathon pace for the full marathon as my running and fitness have dramatically improved.  If you dream, might as well dream big.

Can't wait for the fall running season and the cooler temps.

Have fun guys, I will be there cheering. Did the last 3 Philly Marathons and this year will be doing Marine Corps on October 30th.

My house is 3 blocks from the start/finish so if anyone needs some last minute race support, let me know. Also there is a bar across the street if anyone is up for it afterwards.

I qualified for Boston last year in Philly. It's a pretty fast and flat course and the past couple years the weather has been absolutely perfect.

If I completely lose my mind and there are any slots left I may jump in and run! That would be 3 in one year

One of my buddies signed up and is trying to convince me to do it. I gotta say I am tempted. It just doesn't fit in with my plans for the last 3 months of the year. I was planning on doing another 90 day course of P90X starting right after Pocono 70.3 on Oct. 2. I know myself though and I can't resist a challenge so I may be in... I will decide very soon....

Make the call soon.  Usually sells out right after the Philly Distance/Rock n Roll half mary in September.

I'm in, for marathon number 5! Taking the bus up from DC. I did the half last year and had a great time. I'm following the Pfitz 18/70 plan and LOVING it. Aiming for a 4:05-4:10.

I've read that for a goal time it's good to run a Half Marathon (of similar terrain/elevation) 4 to 6 weeks out from your Marathon, take that time, and add 10 minutes.  This has worked pretty well for me.

It's funny that you and I do a lot of the same races (Harryman, Lake Placid, Philly)

Stalker. Hey, you guys peer pressured me into Philly

I am still in the process of deciding how hard I want to train, which will lead to how hard I want to race. I'm not sure I'm 100% recovered from Placid, but don't want my mileage to drop too low before I start the 12/55. First week of that program is 35 miles and my overall  average for 2011 is just over 20. I've had some big weeks along the way, but some light weeks too. I plan to build  (23, 27, 31) until the first week starting on 8/28. I'm at 17 for this week so far which is the 23 mile week of the ramp. Planning on a 2hr/6mile brick tomorrow.

I should have planned better maybe 'cause I have a long Oly with a 38m bike on 9/10, a 2 day 150 mile charity ride on 9/24-25, and a 63 mile tour ride on 10/9. Some of that conflicts with scheduled long runs. I'm going to back off swimming after the Oly and do just enough biking to cover the remaining rides comfortably but I won't push it. Don't know if I have the time or desire to race a HM in there too.

Bobby you know I'm in.  My wife is doing it too....along with around 15 of our running group friends.  Going to be another party just like Lake Placid

I've read through the Pfitz book a few times and a couple of us are following it.  I'm sort of in between the 55 and 70 plans right now and seeing how my legs feel as I get back into it after Placid.  Ran 30 something last week and about 45 this week and feel ok.  Dropping the bike mileage significantly makes it easier that's for sure.  After about 2 more weeks I should have a good feel if the 70 plan is doable without trashing myself.  Aerobically we have that monster base so it's more about the legs holding up.

That's riiight, we did peer pressure you into this to help overcome the LP blues.  Whoopsy.    I'm kind of in the same boat cause I have an Olympic 9/11 and a 70.3 10/2.  Just wing it the best you can.  That's what I am doing.  We really don't have to worry about picking a Marathon Pace until mid-October.  We can Recover from LP during Thanksgiving.

I signed up on April 1st. This will be my first marathon. I will be doing an Olympic in Sep. and a half marathon in October. My training has mostly consisted of riding to work for 90 miles a week. I need to get some HIT in.

My biggest problem the last month has been lower back pain from the riding and running, but it seems to be getting a little better. I just need to stretch every day and work on the core.

Hello everyone.  First time BT.com poster.  Also, the Philly Marathon will be my first marathon.  Training with Hal Higdon's novice marathon program.  Just hoping to cross the finish line with a smile on my face.  Have my sights set on the Blueman Sprint Tri in Leesport, PA on Oct 9th, which will also be my first triathlon.

Just found this thread.  I am in for my first marathon.  Had a minor setback since I have not been able to run the past 2 weeks.  I caught my heel under the storm door and shredded the back of my heel.  It is still quite tender and although it is healing, there is still a good amount of it still open. I am testing out an easy 3 mile run tomorrow.  If I go much longer without running I will be pulling out of the race.

Keep it covered.  Covered wounds heal twice as first.  Also keep a light amount of neosporin on it, that will also help speed up heeling.

Yeah that is exactly what I have been doing- keeping it covered with neosporin.  I do uncover it for about an hour or so a day but other wise its covered.  It also feels better when covered.
